What they need
The Drilling Fluids Laboratory Technician is responsible for conducting routine laboratory testing of drilling and completion fluids, accurately measuring key fluid properties, recording and sorting experimental data, and assisting Supervisor and Technical writer with mud formula evaluation and optimization. This role performs standard sample collection and processing, maintains and calibrates laboratory testing instruments, manages daily chemical and sample inventory, follows API and safety specifications to complete all experimental tasks, sorts test reports, and ensures all laboratory operations are accurate, standardized and HSE-compliant to support drilling fluid service and technical analysis. As well to capture and share best practices and lessons learned through written and oral communication requiring strong office and software skills.
Responsibilities:
- Drilling Fluid Laboratory Testing: Perform routine and HPHT performance tests for drilling, completion and workover fluids as per API and company standards. Test key parameters including density, viscosity, filtration, salinity and solid content, and complete aging and anti-pollution experiments to provide accurate data for mud formula evaluation.
- Sample Collection & Standardized Processing: Conduct standardized collection, labeling and preservation of field mud and experimental samples. Classify samples by drilling stages and formation conditions, avoid contamination and performance deviation, and ensure sample representativeness and authentic test results.
- Laboratory Instrument Operation & Maintenance: Skillfully operate HPHT testers, viscometers, filtration devices and other lab equipment. Perform daily inspection, cleaning, calibration and basic troubleshooting, record equipment status, and apply for timely maintenance to ensure stable and precise instrument operation.
- Experimental Implementation & Formula Auxiliary Test: Assist in mud formula optimization, additive compatibility verification and new material efficacy testing. Prepare experimental samples and reagents precisely, control test parameters strictly, standardize whole experimental procedures and record all test phenomena and data accurately.
- Data Recording & Sorting Management: Record all experimental data and test parameters in real time and verify data validity. Sort, classify and archive original test records, eliminate invalid data and errors, and guarantee complete, traceable data for technical analysis and report compilation.
- Test Report Compilation & Submission: Compile standardized daily test reports and formula analysis summaries based on experimental results. Conclude fluid performance changes objectively, submit reports on schedule, and provide reliable data support for on-site mud adjustment and drilling technical decisions.
- Laboratory Chemical & Material Management: Manage daily receiving, classification, storage and inventory statistics of lab chemicals and drilling fluid additives. Control reagent dosage and consumption, store materials properly to avoid deterioration, and dispose of waste reagents compliantly to maintain reasonable material reserves.
- Laboratory Daily Operation & Environment Management: Maintain clean and standardized laboratory working areas, test platforms and material storage zones. Standardize instrument and material placement, classify experimental waste for centralized disposal, and ensure compliant and orderly lab daily operation.
- Laboratory HSE Compliance Operation: Comply strictly with laboratory HSE rules and safe operation specifications. Wear all appropriate PPE during testing, and in accordance with all standardize chemical operation procedures to prevent safety hazards and ensure zero safety and environmental incidents in daily laboratory work.
- Technical Cooperation & On-site Support: Cooperate with professional engineers to conduct targeted experiments for downhole complex issues such as wellbore instability and fluid contamination. Feedback abnormal test data timely, assist in analyzing fluid defects, and provide solid experimental support for on-site mud optimization and risk control.
- Perform any other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.
Relevant Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree or Expert knowledge in Drilling Fluid systems, WBS & OBM drilling fluids and Drilling fluid products and additives
- Minimum 3yrs in Mud laboratory experience or min. 10yrs of Field work experience with SAGD experience preferred
- Strong sense of responsibility and attention to detail.
- Diligent, organized, and proactive in implementing systems and policies.
- Commitment to continuous improvement and professional development.
