What they need
Job Purpose
To deliver safe, effective and compliant driver training in line with company procedures, customer requirements and operational expectations. The Driver Trainer will support the Transport and Operations Management teams in maintaining and improving driver competence, safety standards, fuel efficiency and overall driver performance.
You will set the driver standards that new and existing drivers will model themselves on, and, as such, you will need to visibly demonstrate the Company Core Values in your role.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
· Deliver safe and effective driver training from locations throughout the UK, according to the needs of the business.
· Carry out new driver inductions and induction training, ensuring drivers understand company procedures, operational expectations and required standards before undertaking duties independently.
· Deliver Behaviour Based Safety (BBS) development training and reinforce a positive safety culture.
· Carry out driver assessments and competency checks, providing clear feedback and identifying any further training or development requirements.
· Provide remedial or refresher training where driver performance, incidents, observations or management information identifies a need for additional support.
· Deliver fuel-efficiency and economical-driving training, promoting safe driving alongside reduced fuel consumption and vehicle wear.
· Support the ongoing development of existing drivers through coaching, mentoring and practical feedback.
· Where applicable to the driver's role, reinforce requirements relating to dangerous goods, ADR, PPE, loading/unloading, site safety, emergency procedures and company/customer-specific procedures.
· Identify and report training needs, competence concerns, unsafe practices or recurring issues to the Transport Manager and/or Operations Manager.
· Maintain accurate and timely records of training, assessments, competency checks and any actions arising from them.
· Work closely with Transport and Operations Management to ensure training priorities reflect operational requirements and identified risks.
· Cover driver absences as reasonably required by the business
Safety Compliance & Standards
· Lead by example at all times, demonstrating safe, professional and compliant driving and working practices.
· Ensure training is delivered consistently and in accordance with current company procedures and approved training standards.
· Stop, escalate or report any unsafe activity or significant competence concern where it could place the driver, other road users, colleagues, customers, the public, the environment or company assets at risk.
· Support a learning culture in which incidents, near misses, observations and driver feedback are used constructively to improve standards.
Administration & Communication
· Complete all required training and assessment documentation accurately and within the required timescales.
· Provide clear, constructive feedback to drivers and communicate any significant concerns to management promptly.
· Ensure training materials, assessment records and other relevant documentation are kept secure and up to date.
· Attend meetings, briefings or development activities relevant to the role as required.
Secondary Responsibilities
Assist with reasonable requests from Management to support the safe and efficient operation of the business, provided these duties are within the Driver Trainer's competence and do not compromise training, safety or compliance responsibilities.
Person Specification
The successful candidate should demonstrate:
· Strong practical driving experience and a high standard of professional driving.
· Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to coach drivers of differing levels of experience.
· A calm, patient and constructive approach to training and performance improvement.
· A strong commitment to health, safety, compliance and professional standards.
· The ability to identify poor practice, challenge appropriately and escalate concerns when required.
· Good organisational skills and attention to detail, particularly when completing training and assessment records.
· Willingness and ability to travel throughout the UK as required by the business.
· Relevant driver training, assessment, ADR, CPC or other qualifications/experience required by the company for the role, as applicable.
Role Balance
The Driver Trainer role combines driver training with operational driving duties. The balance will vary depending
on the needs of the business, but on average is expected to be approximately:
· 50% Driver Training & Competence
· 50% Operational Driver Cover
This is a guide rather than a fixed allocation, and the balance may change at different times depending
on training requirements, driver availability, holidays, sickness, operational demand and business priorities.
Measures of Success
The Driver Trainer will contribute to:
· Consistent driver competence and compliance with company standards.
· Effective completion of new-driver inductions and ongoing driver assessments.
· Reduction in avoidable driving-related incidents, unsafe behaviours and recurring competence issues.
· Improved fuel efficiency and economical-driving performance where applicable.
· Accurate and complete training and competency records.
· Positive driver engagement with training, coaching and continuous improvement, resulting in high levels of driver retention.
