What they need

About the Waalitj Foundation:

The Waalitj Foundation is a not for profit organisation that strives to be a leader in the provision of education, business and employment opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. We aim to influence and inspire the empowerment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through our diverse work force, which is led by our First Australian role models. We are passionate about our focus in providing education and employment opportunities.

About the Position

We are seeking a committed and culturally responsive DSG Student Support Officer to join our team and play a vital role in supporting young First Nations Australian women in their educational journey. This role is responsible for proactively supporting students through a culturally informed case management approach, ensuring they have the guidance, advocacy, and resources they need to thrive at school.

This is a fixed term position until December 2027, with both full time or part time options available.

As a Student Support Officer, you will work directly with students, teachers, principals, families, and community partners to identify barriers to engagement, attendance, wellbeing, and retention. You will help implement effective early intervention strategies, promote cultural safety, and contribute to a school environment where young women feel supported, respected, and connected to their learning.

We are a supportive and family‑friendly organisation, offering flexibility within an accountable framework. While school‑based roles benefit from structured school‑holiday downtime, we expect high levels of reliability, communication, and engagement during school term delivery. This ensures consistent case management and meaningful support for students in achieving their educational goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide culturally responsive case management for First Nations students
  • Monitor attendance, engagement, and wellbeing to identify early intervention needs
  • Support students to overcome educational barriers, including attendance, behaviour, health, wellbeing, and sorry business
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, principals, families, Elders, and community services
  • Promote cultural safety and inclusiveness within the school environment
  • Build community connections to enhance wraparound support
  • Support WHS, student safety, and risk management processes
  • Contribute positively to team culture, role model values, and uphold organisational standards

What We’re Looking For

  • Strong understanding of First Nations cultures, community contexts, and cultural protocols
  • Experience working with young people in education, youth work, or community services
  • Ability to develop trusting relationships with students, families, and school staff
  • Confident in identifying support needs and planning culturally appropriate interventions
  • Reliable, organised, and committed to being present and engaged during school term
  • Skilled communicator with a strengths‑based and trauma‑informed approach
  • Ability to manage sensitive information with professionalism and confidentiality

Why Join Us?

  • Make a meaningful impact in the lives of young First Nations women
  • Be part of a culturally strong, supportive, and community‑driven organisation
  • Enjoy structured school‑holiday downtime as part of a 52‑week contract
  • Access professional development and growth opportunities
  • Work in a team that values cultural integrity, wellbeing, and inclusion

Please note this is an Identified Position for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Applicants only.

Essential requirements include holding or the ability to obtain:

  • 'C' class driver's licence
  • Working With Children Check
  • Education Department Clearance Check
  • Valid National Police Clearance Check

Application details:

Please apply with a Cover Letter and Resume by 5pm on Friday, 11 September 2026.
