What they need
Being a DSP at MVRA involves supporting adults with developmental disabilities to build lives around what matters to them: their interests, relationships, goals, and choices. Every day is different because the support you provide depends on the person you’re working with and what they want to do.
Some of the things we’ve supported people to do in our community include:
- Joining a Magic: The Gathering card group
- Going to UMaine basketball game
- Trying a new recipe at home
- Finding an accommodation that makes an everyday task easier to do independently
- Talking through important decisions and exploring options
- Meeting people, building friendships, and staying connected to the community
What You’ll Do
You’ll work alongside people in their homes, communities, and workplaces. Depending on each person’s goals, that could mean:
- Helping someone find a local group, introduce themselves, and build friendships around a shared interest
- Planning an outing together, figuring out transportation, and supporting someone as they try something new
- Practicing everyday skills like cooking, shopping, budgeting, or keeping track of appointments
- Finding tools or accommodations that help someone do more independently
- Talking through options so someone can make their own informed decisions
- Supporting people’s safety, dignity, and choices, and documenting the support you provide
The work starts with getting to know each person, and understanding when to offer help, when to encourage, and when to step back.
