What they need

Our Client is an independently owned, multidisciplinary referral hospital near Cambridge and is looking to hire an experienced ECC Veterinary Surgeon to join its dedicated out-of-hours team. The role offers a varied emergency caseload within a specialist hospital environment, combining first opinion emergencies with referral inpatient care and access to experienced specialists.

The Package

  • Salary up to £70,000
  • Annual leave entitlement
  • Private medical insurance
  • Additional day off for your birthday
  • Workplace pension
  • Predictable four-week rolling rota
  • Generous CPD allowance
  • Access to experienced specialists and excellent clinical support

Working Hours / Rota

The position follows a predictable four-week rolling rota comprising nine shifts. This includes one block of three nights, one block of four nights and one weekend of day shifts, providing a consistent working pattern.

Night shifts run from 6:30pm–9am, with weekend day shifts running from 8:30am–7pm. The hospital advises that the position averages approximately 33 hours per week.

Role Description

The successful Veterinary Surgeon will manage first opinion emergency consultations, assess and stabilise critical patients, and oversee referral inpatients when required. The caseload is varied, with the balance between emergency admissions and inpatient responsibilities changing depending on clinical demand.

The role involves working independently overnight as the sole Veterinary Surgeon on site, supported by an experienced nursing and patient care team. Specialist support is available on call across medicine, surgery, anaesthesia and neurology, providing access to additional clinical guidance when needed.

The position offers an excellent opportunity to further develop emergency and critical care skills while gaining exposure to complex referral cases within a multidisciplinary hospital environment.

Team Size

The overnight team includes three Registered Veterinary Nurses and two Patient Care Assistants on site throughout the night, providing strong support with emergency cases and inpatient care.

Reception support is also available on weekday evenings until 11pm.

The wider hospital team includes experienced specialists across medicine, surgery, anaesthesia and neurology, creating a collaborative environment with access to a broad range of clinical expertise.

Practice Details

The independently owned hospital is a modern specialist referral facility near Cambridge, offering advanced diagnostic and treatment capabilities for both emergency presentations and referral patients.

Equipment and facilities include CT, digital imaging, ultrasound, dedicated operating theatres, endoscopy and laboratory facilities. The hospital also benefits from separate canine and feline wards, alongside isolation facilities.

Its multidisciplinary services provide opportunities to work with a varied and complex caseload while benefiting from specialist knowledge and clinical support across several disciplines.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will be an experienced Veterinary Surgeon with a strong interest in emergency and critical care, comfortable making independent clinical decisions and managing urgent cases overnight.

Approximately three years or more of post-qualification experience would be preferred, although confident first opinion Veterinary Surgeons with strong emergency experience will also be considered.

Candidates with previous ECC experience or additional qualifications are particularly welcome. The successful candidate should enjoy the clinical variety and responsibility of overnight work and be confident managing both emergency presentations and inpatient care.

Strong communication skills, a collaborative approach and the ability to work effectively alongside the nursing team and on-call specialists are essential.
