What they need

BASIC FUNCTION

We have an opportunity for an engineer-in-training or engineering graduate at our Blackrod SAGD operation. This field-based role combines hands-on operational experience with facilities and/or production engineering responsibilities in a thermal heavy oil operating environment. You will work closely with operations and engineering staff to support safe, reliable operations and improve plant and well performance.

This role reports directly to the Operations Manager and works closely with facilities and production engineering staff. Initial plant and field rotations will be tailored to the successful candidate’s previous experience and demonstrated competencies. Candidates with limited operating experience will receive hands-on exposure to build an understanding of SAGD operations, while those with relevant experience may transition sooner into engineering responsibilities. The balance of facilities and production engineering work will depend on the candidate’s experience, strengths, interests, and business needs.

This role will commence in late 2026 or early 2027.

PRINCIPAL ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

·      Participate in plant and field operational training appropriate to previous experience, including safe operation of facilities and surface equipment, daily rounds, permitting and lock-out/tag-out procedures, process fluid sampling, and well testing.

·      Monitor and analyze plant and well performance using SCADA and other operating data systems to identify trends, investigate anomalies, and evaluate the results of operating changes.

·      Work with operations, maintenance, and engineering staff to troubleshoot process and equipment issues, identify operating constraints, and evaluate opportunities to improve reliability and capacity.

·      Support facilities engineering activities, including process calculations, equipment evaluation and selection, and review of technical drawings and vendor information under engineering guidance.

·      Assist with facility modifications and projects, including scope development, cost estimates, the Management of Change process, execution coordination, and commissioning support.

·      Support production engineering activities, including well surveillance, production optimization, and planning of well start-ups and servicing activities under engineering guidance.

·      Support operating data validation, production accounting, and investigation of metering, allocation, and process balance discrepancies.

·      Prepare technical analyses, operating recommendations, and performance summaries for review by operations and engineering staff.

REQUIRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

·    Bachelor’s degree in engineering.

·    Previous oil and gas experience in operations or engineering, with SAGD plant or field experience considered an asset. Relevant summer, co-op, or internship experience will be considered for new graduates.

·      Registration or eligibility for registration with APEGA as an Engineer-in-Training.

·      Valid Class 5 driver’s licence and a clean driving record.

·      Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, and comfort learning industry software.

·      Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with operations and engineering staff.

·      Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The successful applicant will work at our Blackrod Commercial Facility located approximately 35 km NW of Wandering River, AB and 240 km NE of Edmonton, AB.

The remote location of these facilities requires camp-based accommodations working a 10x10 rotating schedule, 12-hour shifts (including weekends and holidays).

Multiple progression pathways are possible depending on interest, performance, and initiative. These include moving to another field operation, field-based engineering role, or Calgary-based technical role. The successful candidate is expected to remain field-based for one to three years, depending on previous experience, development progress, and business needs. Field experience is invaluable for future progression as an engineering professional.
