What they need

ELECTRIC PROPULSION ENGINEER

Employment Type: Full-Time

OVERVIEW

MOCX is building Africa’s clean energy infrastructure through innovative mobility and

energy solutions. Through its subsidiary, Rechaj, the company operates a Battery-as-a-

Service (BaaS) model that supports sustainable transportation by providing battery-

swapping services and energy infrastructure for electric vehicles.

As MOCX builds out its Research & Development department in Lagos, we are seeking a

hands-on Electric Propulsion Engineer to own the motors, motor controllers and

drivetrains that power our electric tricycles (kekes).

The successful candidate will integrate, tune, test and improve our propulsion systems so

that every keke on Lagos roads gets the most kilometres per kWh with the fewest

breakdowns. You will be the day-to-day technical lead of the Electric Propulsion team.

This is a chance to work on the heart of an electric vehicle, hands-on, every day. You will

not just maintain someone else’s design; you will take apart, test, rethink and improve the

systems that move thousands of people across Lagos. If you love motors, power and

making machines work better, and want to help build Nigeria’s own electric vehicle

technology, this role is for you.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Integration & Tuning

  • Integrate motors, controllers and gearing into our kekes, including mounting,

cabling, cooling and connections to the battery management system (BMS) and

vehicle control unit (VCU).

  • Tune motor controllers (current limits, throttle maps, regenerative braking and

thermal protection) and turn analysis findings into settings changes.

Testing

  • Design, build and run dyno and road tests, and make sure the data collected is clean

and usable.

  • Work with the Research Analysts on efficiency mapping and energy modelling.

Field Reliability & Suppliers

  • Find the root cause of motor and controller failures in the field and design fixes with

Vehicle Operations.

  • Check incoming motors and controllers against specification and push suppliers on

defects.

Production Support

  • Write installation procedures and quality checklists so Production can build

propulsion systems the same way every time.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics or Mechatronics

Engineering.

  • 4–7 years of hands-on experience with electric vehicles, e-motorcycles, e-tricycles

or industrial motor drives.

  • Practical experience with BLDC/PMSM motors and motor controller set-up or

tuning.

  • Comfortable with test equipment, data logging and workshop work.
  • Evidence of things you have built, fixed or improved.

CORE SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

  • Motor and Controller Integration
  • Controller Tuning and Testing
  • Root-Cause Analysis
  • Technical Documentation
  • Ownership and Speed of Execution

TECHNICAL & PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS (PREFERRED)

  • Familiarity with CAN bus or RS485 communication.
  • MATLAB or Python for test data analysis.
  • Experience working with Chinese or Indian motor and controller suppliers.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

This is a fully in-person role based at our Lagos office, with regular time at our workshop

and swap stations. You will work closely with the R&D Director, the Research Analysts,

Vehicle Operations and Production.

WHY JOIN MOCX?

At MOCX, you will help build the technology behind Africa’s clean energy and electric

mobility transition, designed and engineered in Nigeria.

This is an opportunity to:

  • Own a core technology in one of Africa’s fastest-growing electric mobility

companies.

  • See your work running on thousands of vehicles on real roads.
  • Grow with a fast-expanding R&D department.
  • Receive stock options and share in the company’s growth.

Application Question(s):

  • Are you comfortable working fully in person in Lagos?
  • Briefly describe an electric motor or drive train project you have worked on.
  • What is your salary expectation?
  • How soon can you resume?

Work Location: In person
