What they need
We are seeking an Electrical & Automation Technician with strong PLC skills to join our growing workshop team. You will wire, program and commission the control systems behind our machines: building control panels, writing and modifying PLC and HMI programs, integrating printers, labellers, scanners and vision, and bringing complete lines to life in our workshop and on customer sites.
Main Responsibilities
- Build and wire control panels and machine wiring to electrical schematics, to IS 10101 / EN 60204-1
- Program, modify and fault-find PLCs (Omron, IFM or similar) and HMIs for conveyors, labelling systems and automation cells
- Set up and commission VFDs, servo drives, motors, sensors, safety relays, light curtains and interlocks
- Integrate our auto-ID equipment into lines: print-and-apply labellers, thermal printers, barcode scanners and vision systems, using I/O and industrial comms (Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Modbus TCP)
- Carry out testing and factory acceptance testing (FAT) with the mechanical and project teams before dispatch
- Install and commission systems on customer sites across Ireland, including integration with customer PLCs and line controls
- Support the design team with electrical input, panel layouts, I/O lists and as-built drawings
- Keep program backups, revision records and electrical documentation up to date under our ISO 9001 system
- Provide remote and on-site technical support for commissioned systems when needed
- Follow safe electrical working practices at all times, including LOTO, and support apprentices in the workshop
Required skills:
- Qualified Electrician (QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Craft – Electrical) with industrial experience, or a Level 7 qualification in Electrical, Automation or Mechatronics Engineering
- At least 3 years' experience in industrial automation, machine build or controls
- Hands-on PLC programming and fault-finding, ideally Omron and/or IFM (experience on other platforms such as Siemens or Allen-Bradley also welcome)
- Experience with HMI development, VFDs and servo drives
- Able to read and produce electrical schematics and panel drawings
- Working knowledge of machine safety: safety relays, interlocks, e-stop circuits and guarding
- Manual Handling certificate (or willing to obtain)
- Full, clean driver's licence and willingness to travel to customer sites within Ireland
Preferred skills:
- Experience with conveyors, packaging, labelling or product handling lines
- Safety PLCs and safety standards (EN ISO 13849, PL ratings)
- Industrial networking: Profinet, Ethernet/IP, Modbus, OPC UA
- Integration of printers, scanners, vision or robots into automated lines
- Electrical CAD (EPLAN or AutoCAD Electrical)
- Experience in an ISO 9001 or food/pharma manufacturing environment
Skills and personal attributes:
- Logical, methodical fault-finder who can trace a problem from the code to the field device
- High standard of panel and wiring workmanship, with neat, labelled, documented work
- Comfortable dealing directly with customer engineers and maintenance teams on site
- Works well with mechanical, design and project colleagues to get machines out the door on time
- Self-motivated, able to work unsupervised and keen to learn new equipment and software
- Safety-first approach to electrical work in the workshop and on site
In return, we offer you:
- Competitive salary, depending on experience
- Overtime paid in line with our overtime policy when site work or deadlines require it
- Early finish on Fridays (4pm)
- Company pension scheme
- Gewardz Health online doctor service for you and your family
- Training on the equipment and technologies we supply, from partners including Novexx, Logopak, Zebra and Loftware NiceLabel
- Varied automation projects across many industries, from design input through to commissioning
- A growing, independently owned Irish company with a friendly team
