We tackle any project, including but not limited to custom automation (design and build), machine retro-fit, automation integration, and all required maintenance and service. Our team is always up for a challenge – if you can think it, we can do it.

Electrical Apprentice (Year 3 or 4)

Ascension Automation Solutions is seeking a motivated 3rd- or 4th-year Electrical Apprentice to support the build, installation, testing and troubleshooting of electrical systems for custom automation equipment. This hands-on role includes industrial control panel assembly and wiring, machine wiring, shop testing and commissioning support, and occasional customer-site installation and service. You will work alongside experienced electricians, panel builders, controls specialists and engineers while continuing to develop your skills and experience.

Job Duties

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the layout, assembly and wiring of industrial control panels, including PLC and I/O hardware, VFDs, motor controls, safety components, instrumentation and wire harnesses, under appropriate supervision.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, bills of materials and equipment documentation; ask questions and flag discrepancies to the appropriate team member.
  • Assist with installing, routing, labelling and terminating machine and field wiring for sensors, actuators, motors, safety devices, network equipment and instrumentation.
  • Help test panels and equipment, verify wiring against drawings, identify deficiencies and complete corrections with guidance from experienced team members.
  • Support machine power-up, I/O checkout, commissioning, troubleshooting and debugging in the shop and at customer sites, working with electricians, controls and robotics personnel.
  • Work collaboratively with electricians and panel builders, follow instructions, ask for guidance when needed and contribute to quality workmanship and safe work practices.
  • Work with engineering and shop personnel to learn about electrical designs, panel layouts, build methods and documentation, and contribute to continuous improvement of shop standards.
  • Assist with installing power runs for various types of equipment and machines under appropriate supervision.
  • Follow safe work practices and complete tasks in accordance with applicable electrical codes, customer requirements, company procedures and relevant CSA or UL standards.
  • Take responsibility for assigned tasks by communicating progress, identifying outstanding work, seeking help when needed and following through in line with project schedules, quality standards and safety requirements.
  • Complete other projects and duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in an electrical apprenticeship program and in the 3rd or 4th year of apprenticeship.
  • Some hands-on electrical experience, ideally in industrial automation, electrical systems or industrial control panel building.
  • Basic knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) and Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC), with a willingness to continue learning.
  • Ability to read or learn to interpret electrical drawings and schematics; willingness to develop troubleshooting skills using appropriate test equipment.
  • Interest in learning about PLC-based control systems, VFDs, motor controls, industrial wiring practices and machine electrical installation.
  • Strong attention to detail, a willingness to learn, and the ability to follow instructions and work effectively with supervision.
  • Clear communication, a positive attitude and the ability to collaborate with shop personnel, engineering and other project team members.

Assets

  • Exposure to industrial networks such as EtherNet/IP, PROFINET or CAN-based systems.
  • Exposure to machine safety circuits, emergency stops, safety relays or safety PLCs.
  • Experience with robotics integration, machine commissioning or electrical troubleshooting.

Work Conditions

  • Work is primarily performed in the shop, with occasional travel to customer sites in Canada and elsewhere in North America for installations, commissioning and support.
  • Overtime and weekend work may occasionally be required to meet project and customer schedules.
  • Work involves industrial shop and customer-site environments, including the use of hand tools, power tools and electrical test equipment.
