What they need
Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled and motivated Electrical Controls Engineer to lead the design, programming, and commissioning of automated robotic welding cells. In this role you will develop electrical schematics and panel designs, write and debug PLC, HMI, and safety logic, and take systems from concept through customer acceptance. Your work will directly determine system architecture, build quality, schedule, and safe cell operation. This is a hands-on engineering role with ownership from blank drawing to running cell.
Responsibilities
- Develop complete electrical design packages: power distribution, control schematics, panel layouts, I/O assignments, bills of material, and cable and device schedules.
- Specify and size control system components including PLCs, remote I/O, servo and VFD drives, motor starters, power supplies, protective devices, and safety hardware for 480 VAC three phase and 24 VDC systems.
- Program and commission Allen-Bradley control systems: CompactLogix and GuardLogix PLCs, PanelView HMIs, PowerFlex and Kinetix drives, and EtherNet/IP device configuration.
- Design machine safety systems to applicable standards, including risk assessment, safety circuit architecture, performance level determination, and validation of e-stop chains, interlocked guarding, and light curtains.
- Coordinate with robot integrators on cell layout, robot to PLC interfacing, weld process equipment, and sequence of operations.
- Direct and review panel build and field wiring, provide technical guidance to build technicians, and verify as built conditions against design intent.
- Lead pre-power checkout and controlled first power-up, then execute I/O checkout, drive tuning, sequence debug, and full functional commissioning.
- Diagnose electrical and control faults to root cause using multimeters, network diagnostic tools, and software trending rather than treating symptoms.
- Produce and maintain project documentation: functional specifications, sequence of operations, as built drawings, spare parts lists, and operator and maintenance documentation.
- Support customer runoff, site installation, startup, and training.
- Follow electrical safety procedures, including lockout tagout and arc flash practices, during all design, build, and commissioning activities.
Skills and Qualifications
- Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or an equivalent combination of education and controls experience.
- Proficiency in electrical design software such as AutoCAD Electrical or EPLAN, with the ability to produce clean, complete, revision controlled drawing packages.
- Demonstrated experience programming Rockwell platforms in Studio 5000 and creating PanelView applications in FactoryTalk View.
- Working knowledge of UL 508A panel construction requirements, including component selection, short circuit current rating, wire sizing, grounding and bonding, and segregation of power and signal wiring.
- Applied understanding of machine safety standards and functional safety concepts, including safety relays, safety rated PLCs, and validation practices.
- Familiarity with industrial networks, primarily EtherNet/IP, including topology, addressing, and device level troubleshooting.
- Experience with robotic automation and welding processes preferred, along with exposure to pneumatics, servo motion, and vision systems.
- Strong troubleshooting discipline with multimeters and standard diagnostic instruments, and comfort working in an active build and commissioning environment.
- Clear technical communication with customers, vendors, and shop floor personnel, and documentation that matches what was actually built.
- Reliable, detail driven work: designs that pass inspection the first time and drawings that match the machine.
