About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Electrical Design Engineer to join our clean energy design team in Weybridge, Surrey. In this technical role, you will be responsible for leading the electrical engineering and detail design for utility-scale solar PV installations, commercial rooftop systems, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and EV charging infrastructure projects across the UK.
Working closely with project development managers, grid connection specialists, and civil engineering teams, you will produce robust low-voltage (LV) and high-voltage (HV) electrical designs, select equipment specifications, execute cable calculations, and oversee technical compliance from concept through to commissioning.
Key Responsibilities
- Electrical System Design: Produce detailed LV and HV electrical schematics, single-line diagrams (SLDs), cable layouts, containment designs, and earthing/lightning protection arrangements using AutoCAD and electrical design software (e.g., Amtech / ETAP).
- Equipment Specification: Select and specify electrical plant components, including central/string inverters, transformers, switchgear, protection relays, BESS enclosures, and DC distribution systems.
- System Modeling & Calculations: Perform detailed cable sizing, voltage drop, short-circuit fault level, and thermal calculations in accordance with BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations) and relevant IEC standards.
- Grid Connection Compliance: Collaborate with Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) and National Grid to ensure electrical designs satisfy G99/G100 grid connection requirements and power quality compliance standards.
- Yield & PV Simulation: Conduct solar PV generation modeling and system loss analyses using PVSyst or Helioscope to optimize system sizing and performance ratio (PR).
- Commissioning & Site Oversight: Provide technical support during construction, review vendor factory acceptance test (FAT) reports, and assist site teams with commissioning and energization procedures.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Experience: Minimum 3–5 years of post-qualification experience as an Electrical Design Engineer specializing in renewable energy, solar PV, energy storage, or power distribution systems.
- Education & Certifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (BEng/MEng) in Electrical Engineering or a related power engineering discipline.
- 18th Edition IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671) certification required.
- Professional membership with the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) working toward CEng/IEng status is preferred.
- Software Proficiency: Expert knowledge of AutoCAD, Trimble CXTAP/Amtech, PVsyst, and electrical simulation tools.
- Standards & Regulations: Strong working knowledge of UK grid codes (G99, G100), Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, and CDM Regulations 2015.
- Location: Must be able to reliably commute to our Weybridge office (KT13 postcode area) for team collaboration and occasional site visits across Surrey and the South East.
Benefits
- Competitive base salary (depending on experience)
- Discretionary annual performance bonus
- Flexible hybrid working policy (2–3 days office / home working)
- 25 days annual leave + public holidays + option to purchase additional leave
- Employer pension contribution scheme
