Since its foundation in 1981, SVI has been at the forefront in developing products and techniques for the repair, renovation and decommissioning of pipes.
Predominantly our work has been in the gas industry but increasingly we are undertaking projects in the water and nuclear sectors.
We are looking to recruit an Electrical Design Engineer on a full time, permanent basis. We are seeking a talented individual who can bring a positive, creative and innovative approach to the business, working as part of a multidisciplinary team designing products and systems from concept through to implementation.
Ideally you will hold a degree in Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Embedded Systems Engineering, or a related discipline, with 3–5 years’ experience within a product design / electronics engineering environment. This role is office based, with the ability to work from home when required.
Role Purpose
Within this role, you will be required to:
- Design, develop and test electrical and electronic systems for new and existing products.
- Produce electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, PCB layouts and associated technical documentation.
- Utilise CAD software to develop product assemblies, electrical enclosures and corresponding fabrication drawings / BOMs.
- Support the development of embedded systems, sensors, control systems and low-voltage electronics where required.
- Undertake product design improvements and continuous development activities as business needs arise.
- Analyse product and system failures to improve future designs, reliability and performance.
- Function effectively within a collaborative engineering environment and contribute innovative ideas to design discussions.
- Identify new ideas or potential problems within the utilities industry and develop conceptual solutions to address these challenges.
- Produce written reports detailing design activities, testing results, conclusions and recommendations. These reports may be presented to customers and clients during and after innovation projects.
- Work within the development team to produce conceptual ideas for products and services that can be manufactured and supplied to the UK utilities industries, including gas, water and nuclear sectors.
- Liaise with suppliers and manufacturing teams regarding component selection, prototyping and production processes.
- Support testing, validation and commissioning activities for new products and systems.
- On occasion, travel within the UK to observe, assess and report on the field trial use of products designed for specific projects.
- Attend exhibitions and industry meetings to improve industry knowledge and identify possible business opportunities.
Success Factors
The ideal candidate will have an appreciation of the following:
- Experience in the design and development of electrical or electronic products and systems.
- Knowledge of control systems, sensors, embedded electronics or electromechanical systems.
- Ability to function as part of a multidisciplinary design team where teamwork and collaboration are key to successful project delivery.
- A clear understanding of the product development lifecycle, from concept and prototyping through to manufacture and implementation.
- A willingness to learn new skills and work collaboratively with colleagues across different engineering disciplines.
- Strong problem-solving skills with a practical and innovative approach to engineering challenges.
- A drive to continually learn and improve through further education, CPD and in-house training.
Competencies, Skills and Knowledge
The ideal candidate will hold a degree in one of the following: Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Embedded Systems Engineering, or a similar STEM subject. They will also be working towards professional registration with a recognised engineering body, including (but not limited to) Chartership or Incorporated Engineer status with the IET or similar institution. Applicants without a degree will also be considered where relevant experience is demonstrated.
Ideally you will:
