Familiar with standard concepts, practices and procedures within Electrical Engineering and applies them to accomplish goals. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience designing, testing, and troubleshooting AC to DC power conversion circuits for high-volume consumer electronic products, including isolated and non-isolated power supply topologies such as flyback, buck, boost, and related converter architectures.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, test, and troubleshoot AC to DC power supply circuits.
  • Develop isolated and non-isolated power converter designs including flyback, buck, boost, and other applicable switching power supply topologies. Perform transformer and inductor design, selection, specification review, and validation for switching power supply applications.
  • Analyze power supply performance including efficiency, thermal performance, load regulation, line regulation, transient response, ripple, noise, startup behavior, and fault protection.
  • Support EMI/EMC troubleshooting and mitigation for switch-mode power supplies.
  • Conduct design verification testing for AC/DC power supplies, including abnormal condition testing, overload, short-circuit, surge, ESD, thermal rise, and reliability testing.
  • Work with suppliers to evaluate critical power supply components.
  • Design analog and circuits, switch-mode converters, amplifiers, sensing circuits, and protection circuits.
  • Design digital, microprocessor-based circuits with understanding of the firmware requirements
  • Test prototypes and integrated systems as a part of development process
  • Develop and institute concepts and solutions to design and application problems
  • Operate in a team environment, practicing concurrent engineering by working closely with members on the development team, as well as Manufacturing, Marketing, Packaging, and other team members
  • Participate in design reviews related to assigned projects
  • Develop product specifications with development and marketing team
  • Perform evaluation of circuits for agency testing including UL, CSA, FCC, surge, ESD, dielectric, leakage current, thermal, and EMI/EMC requirements.
  • Understand manufacturing requirements of the products / systems developed and applying Design for Manufacture, Design for Assembly concepts to all functions
  • Assist manufacturing by traveling to the manufacturing facilities for engineering sample and pilot run start-ups as required
  • Perform tolerance, worst-case, thermal, and derating analysis for high-volume production power supply designs.
  • Assist in component documentation and review of component drawings
  • Evaluate and approve alternate and second source of components
  • Understand the markets served by the products / systems developed
  • Troubleshoot field problems
  • Support and update existing products as requested through the Engineering Change Request (ECR) program
  • Identify critical path functions required to meet product availability schedules
  • Develop and improve product development processes and other engineering processes
  • Prepare accurate and up-to-date reports for field and executive management
  • Additional duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Ability to perform power supply calculations including duty cycle, transformer turns ratio, peak/RMS currents, inductance, flux density, efficiency, thermal dissipation, and component stress.
  • Familiarity with AC mains safety design practices including isolation, creepage, clearance, dielectric withstand, leakage current, fusing, MOVs, NTCs, X/Y capacitors, and surge protection.
