Electrical Engineer - Power Generation
Employment Type: Contract-to-Direct or Long-Term Contract
Pay Range: $55.00–$75.00 per hour, depending on experience
Location: Missouri and Kansas - Multiple Locations Available (see below)
Work Arrangement: Hybrid or Remote, based on candidate location and project needs
About the Opportunity
We're looking for an experienced Electrical Engineer with a strong background in conventional power generation to support projects across power generation, substations, renewable energy, and industrial power systems.
You'll be involved in meaningful engineering work from early design through construction and commissioning. The role combines power system studies, electrical design, equipment selection, and field support, giving you the chance to work on different types of projects and solve practical engineering challenges.
You'll work alongside experienced engineers and multidisciplinary teams while having the opportunity to take ownership of your work, contribute technical ideas, and grow your project experience.
Location & Flexibility
Positions are available in Missouri ( St. Louis, Kansas City, Jefferson City, and Ballwin ) and Kansas ( Overland Park, Wichita, and Topeka ). Teams typically work in a hybrid environment, giving engineers flexibility while maintaining the collaboration needed to deliver complex projects.
If you're a strong fit for the role but aren't located near one of the offices, we're open to discussing a remote arrangement based on experience, project requirements, and travel availability. Some projects may also require occasional travel or field work depending on project needs.
Responsibilities
- Create single-line and three-line diagrams, schematics, general arrangements, substation layouts, wiring diagrams, and other engineering drawings.
- Perform load flow, short-circuit, grounding, equipment sizing, and protective coordination studies.
- Design and evaluate substation grounding grids, lightning protection, AC/DC systems, electrical distribution, and protective relaying.
- Develop equipment specifications and procurement packages, and review vendor drawings, technical submittals, and equipment selections.
- Prepare engineering calculations, technical specifications, reports, cost estimates, and construction packages.
- Provide engineering support during field investigations, construction, testing, commissioning, startup, and field modifications.
- Coordinate with civil, structural, mechanical, controls, and construction teams to resolve design challenges and support project execution.
- Apply NEC, IEEE, NESC, NEMA, IEC, and applicable NERC requirements to project designs.
- Support design reviews, technical documentation, and regulatory compliance while maintaining engineering quality and responsiveness to client needs.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and contribute to a collaborative, multidisciplinary engineering team.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
- 5+ years of electrical engineering experience, preferably supporting conventional power generation facilities, including simple-cycle and combined-cycle plants.
- Experience with electrical design, power system studies, and engineering calculations.
- Familiarity with substations, electrical distribution, protection and control, and power generation systems.
- Working knowledge of applicable electrical codes, standards, and design practices.
- Experience with one or more power system analysis or electrical design tools, such as ETAP, SKM, Aspen, CAPE, or AutoCAD Electrical.
- Experience supporting project coordination, cost estimates, technical proposals, or project tracking.
Preferred Qualifications
- EIT or PE certification
- Experience leading engineering tasks or small-to-mid-sized projects
- Construction, commissioning, startup, or field experience
- Experience with renewable energy, utility, substation, or industrial power projects
- Experience with AutoCAD or AutoCAD Electrical
- Experience working directly with clients, vendors, contractors, or project teams
- OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER certification, where applicable to project requirements
Why This Role?
You'll work across a variety of power projects rather than being limited to one facility or one narrow area of engineering. Your work can span design, analysis, equipment selection, field support, and project execution.
It's a good opportunity for an engineer who wants to keep building technical depth while taking on more responsibility and seeing projects move from the drawing board into the field.
Long-term contract and contract-to-direct opportunities are available , depending on your goals and project needs.
