What they need

This list of duties and responsibilities is not all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities as management may deem necessary from time to time.

Panel Building

  • Lay out, assemble, and wire control panels and sub-panels per electrical schematics, panel layouts, and customer specifications.

  • Mount and wire components including PLCs, I/O modules, drives, power supplies, circuit protection, relays, terminal blocks, and safety devices.

  • Cut, strip, terminate, and label wire using crimpers, ferrules, and labeling equipment; route and dress wiring in duct to shop standards.

  • Modify enclosures (drill, punch, cut) to fit components, operator devices, and penetrations.

  • Perform continuity and point-to-point checks and mark up schematics with as-built changes.

  • Build to industry codes and standards, including NEC, NFPA 79, UL 508A (where specified), ANSI, and OSHA.

Machine Interconnect

  • Install interconnect wiring between control panels, junction boxes, operator stations, field devices, and machine modules.

  • Install and terminate sensors, solenoid valves, motors, safety devices, cordsets, and quick-disconnects.

  • Install cable tray, wireway, flexible and rigid conduit, cord grips, and related hardware.

  • Tag and disconnect interconnect for shipment, then reinstall and reconnect it at the customer site.

Mechanical Assembly

  • Read assembly drawings and CAD models to assemble frames, guarding, conveyors, and automation components.

  • Align and position components manually or with hoists and lifts, using drills, grinders, saws, and hammer drills as needed.

  • Assemble and plumb pneumatic components; apply working knowledge of hydraulics where required.

  • Verify parts with calipers, gauges, and micrometers, and measure and lay out equipment floor plans.

Installation, Startup & Travel

  • Travel approximately 25% annually to customer sites for machine installation, interconnect, debug, and startup.

  • Support controls engineers during I/O checkout, debug, and startup by troubleshooting wiring and device issues.

  • Work nights and weekends as needed to meet project deadlines.

General

  • Work independently and as part of a project team to meet build schedules and quality standards.

  • Keep panel shop schematics, materials, inventory, and tools organized, and maintain a personal set of hand tools.

  • Follow and comply with all safety and work rules and regulations, including lockout/tagout and electrical safety practices.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience

  • Associate’s degree in electrical, electromechanical, or industrial maintenance technology, or three years of related experience and/or technical/vocational training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Hands-on experience building and wiring industrial control panels.

  • Experience with industrial automation equipment, conveyors, and automation components preferred; pneumatics and hydraulics experience helpful.

  • Ability to travel approximately 25% annually, including overnight stays at customer sites.

Additional Competencies

  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, and mechanical CAD drawings.

  • Working knowledge of industrial control components, including PLCs, VFDs, servo drives, safety relays, and sensors.

  • Understanding of electrical fundamentals (AC/DC, three-phase power, 24 VDC control circuits) and proficient use of a multimeter.

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity, with neat, consistent wiring workmanship.

  • Knowledge of industrial safety standards, including NFPA 70E electrical safety and lockout/tagout.

  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills; ability to work independently and within a team, in the shop and at customer sites.

Under the direction of the Shop Manager, the Electrical Machine Builder builds, wires, and installs the electrical control systems for MWES custom automation equipment. The primary focus is fabricating and wiring control panels and completing machine interconnect wiring from electrical schematics, supported by mechanical assembly of industrial equipment from CAD drawings. The role supports installation, debug, and startup at customer sites and requires travel of approximately 25% annually.
