Join a Team Where You're Valued

At Birds Bakery, we've been part of the East Midlands for over 100 years, and while we're proud of our products, we're even prouder of our people.

We're looking for an Electrically Biased Maintenance Engineer to join our friendly and supportive Engineering team. This is an opportunity to become part of a family-owned business where colleagues genuinely look out for one another, teamwork is valued, and your contribution makes a real difference every day.

We know there are engineering roles offering shift patterns, nights, and potentially higher salaries. What Birds offers is something different: a stable Monday to Friday day shift, a welcoming culture, long-term job security, and a team environment where people support one another and take pride in what they do.

The Role

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, you'll play a key role in maintaining and improving equipment across both our bakery operation and retail estate, helping to ensure our production and stores continue to run efficiently and safely.

This is a varied role that combines planned maintenance, breakdown response, project work, and continuous improvement activities.

Key ResponsibilitiesMaintenance & Repairs

  • Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns across the bakery and retail stores, ensuring minimal disruption to operations.
  • Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) activities in line with schedules.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical and mechanical faults.
  • Inspect and maintain plant, machinery, and equipment to ensure safety and efficiency.
  • Take a proactive approach to reducing downtime and preventing recurring issues.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records and daily activity reports.

Equipment & Projects

  • Support the installation, testing, and commissioning of new bakery and retail equipment.
  • Assist with bakery improvements, store refits, and engineering projects.
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance on machinery and equipment.
  • Stay up to date with technical developments and industry best practice.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives that enhance efficiency and reliability.

Operational Support

  • Provide engineering support across both bakery and retail operations.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across all departments to resolve issues effectively.
  • Help reduce reliance on external contractors through in-house engineering expertise.
  • Support occasional weekend work when required to meet business needs.

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure all work complies with Health & Safety, engineering, and food safety standards.
  • Follow Engineering Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) at all times.
  • Champion safe working practices and maintain high standards of housekeeping.
  • Conduct inspections and checks to help maintain a safe and compliant environment.

What We're Looking For

We're looking for somebody who is technically capable but also enjoys working as part of a team and building positive relationships with colleagues across the business.

You will ideally have:

  • A recognised electrical qualification.
  • Experience as an electrically biased Maintenance Engineer within manufacturing, food production, FMCG, or a similar industrial environment.
  • Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills.
  • A proactive and logical approach to maintenance.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills.
  • Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office and Teams.
  • The ability to prioritise workloads and perform under pressure.

Desirable Qualifications & Experience

  • 17th or 18th Edition Electrical Qualification.
  • Time-served Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineer background.
  • Experience commissioning equipment and delivering engineering projects.
  • Knowledge of continuous improvement and lean manufacturing principles.
  • Food industry or FMCG experience.
  • Food Hygiene certification.
  • IOSH Working Safely or equivalent Health & Safety qualification.

What You'll Receive

  • £40,500 salary
  • Monday to Friday working pattern with no rotating shifts
  • 4 weeks' holiday, increasing to 5 weeks with length of service, plus Bank Holidays
  • Staff discount
  • Weekly pay and on-call allowance
  • The opportunity to work on a diverse range of bakery and retail equipment
  • A supportive, collaborative engineering team
  • Long-term career stability within a successful family-owned business
  • The chance to genuinely make an impact within a well-respected East Midlands company

Why Birds?

The people who thrive at Birds are those who enjoy being part of a team. Our Engineering department works closely together, shares knowledge, supports one another during busy periods, and takes pride in delivering a great service to the wider business.

If you're a qualified electrician looking for a role where you'll be appreciated, supported, and part of a business with strong values and a fantastic team culture, we'd love to hear from you.

Apply today and become part of the Birds Bakery family.

I think the biggest selling points here are actually the Monday-Friday day shift, being home every evening, the family-business culture, job security, and the supportive engineering team. I'd make those the headline selling points because they're what differentiate Birds from larger FMCG businesses that might pay a little more but require shifts, nights, or a much more pressurised environment.

Pay: £40,500.00 per year

Benefits:

  • Casual dress
  • Company events
  • Company pension
  • Discounted or free food
  • Employee discount
  • Free parking
  • Health & wellbeing programme
  • On-site parking
