Project Engineer – Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
Location: Poland
Working Pattern: Remote with travel to project sites across Europe and the UK
Sector: Renewable Energy / Battery Energy Storage Systems
Contract Type: To be confirmed
The Opportunity
Spencer Ogden is seeking an experienced Project Engineer to support the delivery of utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects across Poland and the wider EMEA region.
This is an excellent opportunity for an engineering professional with a strong background in electrical power systems, renewable energy and grid-connected infrastructure to take ownership of project engineering activities, coordinate multidisciplinary teams and ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently and to the highest technical standards.
Working closely with internal engineering teams, external design consultants, subcontractors and procurement stakeholders, you will play a key role in ensuring engineering deliverables meet contractual requirements, are technically compliant and are suitable for construction.
The successful candidate will bring strong knowledge of the Polish energy market, relevant grid regulations and construction requirements, alongside experience delivering projects involving medium-voltage (MV) systems, substations, renewable energy or battery storage.
Key Responsibilities
Manage external engineering consultants, subcontractors and internal multidisciplinary teams across electrical, civil, network and permitting activities.
Take responsibility for assigned equipment supply-only and Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) projects, covering systems up to medium-voltage grid connection.
Ensure engineering deliverables are completed on time, within budget and to the required quality standards.
Review internal and external engineering designs to verify compliance with project specifications, contractual obligations, applicable regulations and construction requirements.
Coordinate design reviews and ensure alignment with internal quality management processes, including ISO 9001 requirements.
Identify opportunities for value engineering, innovative design solutions and improved constructability.
Support procurement activities by developing technical specifications for construction works and electrical equipment, as well as reviewing vendor and subcontractor technical proposals.
Consider country-specific engineering requirements, cost implications, permitting constraints and regional design considerations.
Manage project escalations, identify engineering risks and implement practical solutions to maintain project progress.
Ensure assigned projects comply with relevant safety requirements and contribute to the achievement of project safety KPIs.
Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to improve engineering processes, working practices and project delivery.
Travel to BESS project sites across Europe and the UK as required.
Key Requirements
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or a related technical discipline.
Minimum of five years’ relevant engineering experience, ideally within utility-scale energy, renewable power generation or electrical infrastructure projects.
Valid Polish construction licence (Uprawnienia Budowlane) covering electrical design and approval of construction drawings, preferably in the electrical and power engineering specialisation (specjalno?? instalacyjna w zakresie sieci, instalacji i urz?dze? elektrycznych i elektroenergetycznych).
Proven experience in the design, engineering or delivery of power systems for utility-scale installations, solar PV plants, battery energy storage systems or similar energy infrastructure.
Strong knowledge of AutoCAD and experience reviewing technical drawings and engineering documentation.
Understanding of EPC project delivery, particularly for high-voltage and medium-voltage systems, substations, renewable energy or conventional power generation.
Familiarity with Polish energy legislation (Prawo Energetyczne), construction regulations, permitting requirements and Polish grid codes.
Knowledge of relevant Polish grid requirements, including IRiESP, IRiESD, NC RfG and applicable PSE requirements.
Understanding of Polish and European standards applicable to substations, transformers, MV systems and BESS installations.
Experience coordinating multidisciplinary engineering activities, managing external stakeholders and working across multiple projects.
Strong communication, leadership and stakeholder management skills, with a practical, solution-oriented approach.
Fluency in both Polish and English is essential.
Additional technical certifications and specialist training would be advantageous.
What We’re Looking For
We are looking for a proactive and technically capable engineer who can take ownership of project deliverables, manage competing priorities and work effectively with stakeholders across different countries and disciplines.
You will be comfortable working in a dynamic project environment where requirements may evolve, demonstrating flexibility, sound engineering judgement and a commitment to continuous improvement.
The ideal candidate will be collaborative, commercially aware and focused on delivering safe, high-quality and constructable engineering solutions.
Why Apply?
Work on utility-scale BESS and renewable energy infrastructure projects across the EMEA region.
Take ownership of engineering deliverables and collaborate with multidisciplinary international teams.
Contribute to the development of innovative, technically robust energy storage solutions.
Benefit from a flexible remote or hybrid working arrangement, with travel to project sites as required.
