What they need
About MER Equipment & Our Electrical Pipeline
At MER Equipment, we design, manufacture, and support heavy-duty marine power generators, HPUs, PTOs, engine accessories and harnesses, custom control panels, and paralleling switchgear for commercial vessels, workboats, and yachts. We are growing and want to expand our electrical division and product lines!
We’re nimble and we don't operate in rigid corporate silos. Instead, we run an end-to-end electrical lifecycle, taking complex projects from initial concept all the way to dockside support:
[Sales Engineering & Specs] ➔ [Design & Compliance] ➔ [Next-Gen R&D] ➔ [Panel Build & Harnessing] ➔ [Testing & Commissioning] ➔ [Field Support]
To support our growth and expand our product lines—including high-voltage DC vessel architectures, variable speed axial flux generators, and advanced PLC controls—we are expanding our Electrical Department.
Rather than fitting smart people into overly narrow job descriptions, we are looking for inquisitive, capable problem-solvers and matching the role to your strengths. Whether you are a pure designer, a hands-on panel builder, an automation programmer, a field commissioning tech, or someone who spans the entire gap from design to support, we have a place for you.
Where You Could Fit in Our Pipeline
Depending on your background and interests, your day-to-day work can focus on one (or a combination) of the following areas:
- System Design, CAD & Compliance
- Working alongside our team to produce 2D wiring schematics, point-to-point drawings, and Bills of Materials (BOMs).
- Utilizing SolidWorks (Sheet Metal & Layout) to design custom electrical enclosures, mounting sub-panels, and busbar configurations.
- Assisting with marine class society standards (ABS, DNV) and USCG CFR regulatory compliance.
- Next-Generation R&D & Automation
- Programming PLCs (CoDeSys, Siemens, etc.) and digital generator controllers (Woodward, ComAp, Deif, Deep Sea) for automated load sharing, paralleling, seamless shore-power transfers and battery and inverter power supply integration.
- Developing power electronics topologies for variable speed generation, silicon carbide inverters, high-voltage DC buses, and Battery Management System (BMS) integrations.
- Panel Assembly, Harnessing & Fabrication
- Physically laying out, mounting components, wiring, and assembling custom 3-phase AC switchboards (up to 480V) and engine control panels.
- Modifying electrical enclosures, routing heavy power cables, and building custom engine harnesses to withstand harsh marine environments.
- Testing, Field Commissioning & System Support
- Performing shop testing and validation of switchboards and generators before they ship.
- Boarding commercial vessels to handle dockside commissioning, system tuning, and load-bank testing.
- Providing high-level diagnostic troubleshooting for custom deployed systems as part of a structured, shared support team.
What We Are Looking For
We care more about your problem-solving grit, mechanical/electrical intuition, and eagerness to learn than a specific degree title. You might be a great fit if you have experience in any of the following:
- Degrees or Hands-On Fields: Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering Technology (BSEET), Mechanical Engineering Technology (BSMET), Industrial Automation, Electro-Mechanical Systems, Navy Electrician’s Mate (EM/IC), custom panel building, programming, or custom design and fabrication.
- Systems Thinker: You understand how software, electrical circuits, and heavy mechanical equipment interact.
- Schematic & Tool Literacy: You can read multi-page electrical schematics and feel comfortable using multimeters, power tools, and diagnostic software.
- Cross-Disciplinary Curiosity: You love getting your hands dirty testing what you designed, or you enjoy suggesting engineering improvements based on what you built or fixed in the field.
- Diesel Engine and Generator Apptittude: If you have been a diesel engine or generator technician and are looking for the next chapter in your life and career, this could be it.
What We Offer
- Direct Impact: Work in a collaborative environment where you see your designs built in our shop and running on working vessels within months, not years.
- Clear Operational Support: Our sales, quoting, parts procurement, and project scheduling are actively managed by dedicated leads, leaving our engineering and technical team free to focus on building and solving.
- Work-Life Balance: Sustainable schedules with a structured, shared after-hours support rotation backed by premium customer billing policies to protect team well-being and avoid burnout.
- Competitive Compensation: Health benefits, 401K retirement plan coming this July, paid time off, and continuous skill development, annual cost of living wage increases, not including performance raises.
- Flexible hours: These are predominately in-office positions, but hours are flexible to accommodate traffic and some work-from home options may be accommodated.
- Salary: $80-$150K, depending on position and experience.
How to Apply
Please submit your resume and cover letter, but more importantly, tell us your story. In your application, please include a short note addressing:
- Where in our pipeline do your skills sit right now? (Design, Automation, Panel Assembly, Field Service, or a mix?)
- What kind of work do you enjoy doing most?
- Briefly describe a physical or technical project you designed, built, or fixed (professional or personal). Include your portfolio if you have one!
Pay: $80,000.00 - $150,000.00 per year
Benefits:
- Flexible schedule
- Paid time off
Work Location: In person
