What they need

About the opportunity

VMI Manufacturing produces equipment for the petroleum and fueling industry. We are seeking an experienced electronics professional to lead our electronics department, provide technical support, and help improve our products and manufacturing processes.

This is a technical leadership position, not primarily an assembly position. You must be capable of building and testing the equipment, but your primary responsibilities will be understanding how our products operate, resolving technical problems, evaluating components, and directing the department’s work.

Reporting directly to the General Manager, you will supervise a small department and take responsibility for electronics production, quality, technical support, and ongoing improvement. Product-specific training and support will be provided by management and experienced staff.

What you will do

· Provide product technical support. Help customers, contractors, and distributors understand and troubleshoot our electronics products. Gather relevant information, identify causes, communicate clear guidance, and follow issues through resolution.

· Provide on-site troubleshooting and start-up support. Travel periodically to customer locations to troubleshoot equipment issues and assist with system start-ups. Provide hands-on guidance to customers and contractors who are not yet familiar with our equipment, helping them understand system operation and proper use.

· Oversee and support established product lines. Develop a thorough understanding of how our products operate and how their components work together. Direct production and testing, support field troubleshooting, and identify practical improvements to products and documentation.

· Assist with new product line development. Help evaluate customer applications, review supplier specifications and system capacity, develop appropriate configurations, and support prototype builds. Help refine quoting, building, testing, and support processes.

· Evaluate components and replacement options. Review specifications and datasheets, work with suppliers and purchasing, and identify suitable alternatives when components are unavailable or obsolete. Verify compatibility and applicable compliance requirements, arrange necessary testing, and document approved changes.

· Lead electronics department operations. Establish priorities and schedules, oversee workmanship and completed-product testing, coordinate material needs and purchasing decisions, and guide department personnel in their work and development.

· Maintain documentation and compliance. Keep bills of material, build instructions, testing procedures, and revision records accurate. Apply applicable UL 508A and UL 698A requirements.

What you will bring

· Strong practical knowledge of electronics and electrical control systems, including the ability to understand circuit operation and troubleshoot beyond following assembly instructions.

· Demonstrated ability to interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, technical manuals, and component datasheets and use appropriate test equipment.

· Experience evaluating or selecting electronic and electrical components.

· Demonstrated leadership and follow-through, including organizing work, guiding others, and taking responsibility for technical problems or projects.

· Clear verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to explain technical issues to people with different levels of experience.

· Ability to maintain accurate technical documentation and bills of material using Microsoft Excel.

Experience that would be especially valuable

Experience in electronics manufacturing, industrial control panels, product technical support, or department supervision is preferred. Familiarity with UL 508A, UL 698A, and intrinsically safe circuits is a strong plus.

Independent electronic design capability and drafting/CAD skills are welcome but are not required.

Experienced technicians with demonstrated technical depth and leadership are encouraged to apply. Prior experience with VMI products is not required.

Benefits and support

Health insurance eligibility begins after 90 days. Paid sick time is available for use beginning on the 90th day. Vacation and 401(k) eligibility begin after one year, subject to applicable company policies and plan terms.

This position offers the opportunity to lead a small department, develop specialized product expertise, and directly influence how our equipment is built, supported, and improved.
