What they need
Company Description ReconRobotics, Inc., founded in 2005, is a global leader in the research and development of tactical micro-robot systems. Building on its pioneering Recon Scout® robot and the advanced Throwbot® 2 robot, the company focuses on technologies that enhance safety and situational awareness in high-risk operations. Its systems are designed to protect law enforcement and military personnel by providing real-time intelligence and increased standoff distance. More than 7,000 robot systems have been deployed worldwide, serving multiple branches of the United States Armed Forces, international allied forces, and over 800 federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. Team members at ReconRobotics contribute to mission-critical solutions used in demanding field environments.
Role Description This full-time Electronics Technician role is an on-site position located in Edina, MN. The Electronics Technician is a hands-on generalist responsible for moving innovative robotic hardware from prototype through low-volume production. This role is ideal for an electronics technician who enjoys working close to the hardware, solving problems at the board level, and seeing their work quickly translate into functioning products.
Working across both engineering and production, this role will have direct ownership of your work and frequent opportunities to identify issues, determine root causes, implement fixes, and verify the results. The position offers exposure to the full hardware lifecycle—from early prototypes and engineering builds to repeatable low-volume production.
Responsibilities
- Precision soldering and rework of fine-pitch surface-mount components (QFN, 0402; 0201 and BGA rework a plus) to the precision required for prototype and low-volume builds.
- Debug battery-powered embedded electronics at the board level using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multimeters, and bench power supplies, isolating faults across analog, digital, and power domains.
- Assemble, bring up, and test small robotic systems in both R&D and production settings, and contribute to process improvements as build volumes grow.
- Develop and maintain clear documentation — work instructions, test procedures, build notes, and records sufficient for another technician to reproduce the work.
- · Diagnose electrical and hardware issues and work with engineering to identify root causes and effective corrective actions.
- · Identify recurring production issues and recommend practical improvements to product design, assembly methods, and test processes.
- Follow established quality, safety, ESD, and workmanship standards.
Skills & Competencies
Required:
- Demonstrated proficiency in fine-pitch soldering and rework. This is a primary screening criterion. Familiarity with IPC workmanship standards is preferred.
- Ability to read schematics and PCB layouts, and to translate them into a structured debugging approach.
- Experience with embedded systems, microcontrollers, or digitally controlled electronic systems.
- Practical command of bench instrumentation and a methodical, hypothesis-driven approach to failure analysis.
- Sufficient Python and Linux proficiency to maintain test automation independently. A formal software engineering background is not required.
- Mechanical aptitude for assembly and fixture work, and the flexibility to move among bench, production, and design tasks as priorities shift.
The ideal candidate would also:
- Develop and adapt Python scripts in Linux to automate testing, data capture, and instrument control (e.g., over serial, GPIB/VISA, or comparable interfaces).
- Design, build, document, and validate custom test fixtures and equipment, from initial concept through wiring and assembly.
- Have experience working in an ESD-controlled environment.
- Have experience transitioning engineering prototypes into repeatable manufacturing processes.
- Familiarity with robotic systems, electromechanical assemblies, sensors, motors, batteries, or other small embedded systems.
Qualifications
- 2+ years of experience in electronics assembly, repair, test, manufacturing, or a related hands-on technical role; equivalent practical experience may be considered. REQUIRED
- Associate or Bachelor’s degree in electronics or electrical technology, relevant trade or military training, or comparable evidence of competence.
- IPC soldering or workmanship certification, such as IPC J-STD-001 or IPC-A-610.
- There is no security clearance required at this time, but applicant must be capable of working in the United States and obtaining a security clearance if required.
- Strong foundation in Electronics Technology and Electricity for working with circuits, components, and electronic systems.
- Hands-on Troubleshooting abilities to diagnose, isolate, and resolve issues in electronic devices and test setups.
- Experience with Maintenance & Repair of electronic equipment, tools, and production fixtures in a manufacturing or lab environment.
- Ability to read and interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation.
- Familiarity with test equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, power supplies, and signal generators.
- Attention to detail, steady hand-eye coordination, and adherence to ESD and safety best practices.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate across engineering and production teams.
- Experience in defense, robotics, or high-reliability electronics manufacturing is beneficial.
