What they need
Electrostatic Coatings Line Technician — Structural Steel
A day in the life
You arrive to a line of structural steel beams ready for finishing. After a quick review of the schedule, you don PPE—safety glasses, protective clothing, mask/respirator, hearing protection, gloves, cap, and protective sleeves—and power up the automated coating systems. You verify oven setpoints, pump pressures, bath temperatures, and booth readiness, then run a fast series of checks on the pH degreasing bath, performing both pH testing and product titration to lock in the day’s chemistry.
Before the first beam rolls through, you dial in the electrostatic paint guns—setting high-voltage and airflow—to achieve the target film build. You program painting parameters based on product geometry and throughput requirements, and confirm conveyor speeds, drying and baking profiles, and spray patterns.
What you’ll do
- Run the full automated paint line: machines, ovens, baths, pumps, paint booths, and drying systems for structural steel beams.
- Execute the complete process flow: degreasing, rinsing, drying, baking, and painting.
- Set, fine-tune, and monitor paint guns (kV and airflow) and adjust parameters as production changes.
- Operate and monitor the pH degreasing bath, including pH testing and titration for bath control.
- Verify coating quality with an Elcometer and other inspection devices; make on-the-fly adjustments to maintain consistency.
- Adhere to ATEX safety practices around explosive atmospheres and automatic fire suppression systems.
- Keep the line pristine: routine cleaning of equipment, floors, powder bins, tanks, and work areas.
- Use cleaning tools and ATEX-rated vacuum systems; maintain suction cabins and cleaning systems for powder tanks.
- Safely collect and dispose of powder using the correct bags, shovels, and dust-collection equipment.
- Perform basic preventive maintenance, including replacing spare parts and servicing blow guns.
- Follow all safety, quality, environmental, and production procedures and sustain a clean, organized, safe workspace.
What you bring
- Hands-on experience with automated paint, powder coating, or industrial coating lines (structural steel or heavy industrial is a plus).
- Working knowledge of paint application equipment, ovens, pumps, baths, and automated systems.
- Ability to set paint gun voltage, airflow, and other coating parameters.
- Understanding of pH testing, titration, and chemical bath controls.
- Experience with Elcometer or similar coating thickness inspection tools.
- Strong grasp of ATEX/explosive-atmosphere safety requirements.
- Mechanical aptitude for preventive maintenance and part replacement.
- Reliability with PPE and detailed safety procedures; high attention to product quality.
