Job Description
Cynergy Professional Systems is seeking a Microwave Systems Engineer to support the IT and Radio Systems mission at Marine Corps Installations West (MCIWEST G-6), Camp Pendleton, CA.
The ELMR/Microwave Systems Engineer is responsible for the engineering, operation, and sustainment of the Regional Microwave transport network, the Aviat microwave backhaul that connects Marine Corps installations across California and Arizona. This network carries traffic for the installation Enterprise Land Mobile Radio (E-LMR). The engineer works closely with the Motorola Solutions project team and on-site System Manager to maintain the ASTRO 25 system: supporting maintenance and upgrade activities, coordinating outages and changes, and resolving issues that span the microwave transport and radio network.
This position requires engineering-level experience with licensed microwave systems and a working knowledge of P25 LMR system architecture.
Responsibilities
Microwave Network Engineering
- Serve as the lead engineer for the Regional Microwave network, responsible for the design, configuration, optimization, and maintenance of Aviat microwave links across multiple installation sites.
- Perform path engineering, link budget calculations, Fresnel zone and fade margin analysis, interference assessments, and antenna alignment.
- Coordinate frequency assignments with the installation spectrum manager, including DD Form 1494 and NTIA processes.
- Configure and maintain protection switching (ring and hot-standby), QoS, adaptive modulation, and cross-connect management.
- Monitor network health and performance through Aviat ProVision EMS, and identify and correct degradation trends before they affect service.
- Troubleshoot link failures and performance issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions.
- Conduct network configuration audits, and maintain as-built drawings, configuration backups, IP address plans, and equipment inventories.
E-LMR Support & Motorola Coordination
- Serve as the primary technical interface between the Cynergy Radio Services team and the Motorola Solutions project team and System Manager supporting the ASTRO 25 A2024 system.
- Support Motorola during scheduled maintenance, software updates, and corrective maintenance, including site access, transport readiness, and on-site technical support.
- Verify that microwave transport capacity, QoS, and network configuration meet ASTRO 25 A2024 system requirements.
- Coordinate planned outages and configuration changes affecting the microwave transport and E-LMR system, and communicate their impact to government stakeholders.
- Isolate faults between the microwave transport, IP network, and radio system, and work with Motorola to resolve cross-system issues.
- Track open issues, maintenance actions, and service tickets with Motorola and report status to the Radio Services Manager.
Systems Engineering & Leadership
- Develop System Concepts of Operations (ConOps), architecture drawings, and technical specifications for the microwave and radio transport network.
- Serve as the senior technical authority for microwave systems, resolving escalated issues and establishing technical standards for the team.
- Mentor junior technicians, and identify training needs.
- Coordinate with the ISSM and A&A teams to ensure systems remain secure and compliant with DoD policy.
- Lead technical meetings with government stakeholders, and prepare white papers, engineering assessments, and status reports.
- Train operations and maintenance staff on new systems and capabilities.
Location & Travel
- Position is located at Camp Pendleton, CA.
- Must be willing to travel throughout West Coast locations (CA & AZ) to support customer initiatives, including MCAS Yuma, MCAGCC Twentynine Palms, MCAS Miramar, and MCLB Barstow.
- May be required to respond to after-hours requests in a 24x7 environment.
- Valid driver’s license required. Must be able to obtain any licenses required to operate forklifts, aerial lifts, or bucket trucks as necessary.
Security Clearance
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Active Secret Clearance required. Top Secret clearance eligibility preferred.
Required Experience
Microwave Systems (Required)
- Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience engineering and maintaining licensed microwave transport networks (6–11 GHz).
- Proficiency with Aviat microwave platforms (Eclipse, WTM, or CTR), including installation, configuration, optimization, and repair.
- Proficiency with Aviat ProVision EMS for monitoring, alarm management, and performance reporting.
- Microwave path engineering experience using Pathloss 5 or equivalent software.
- Ability to interpret microwave alarms, RSL and error performance data, and threshold metrics.
LMR Systems (Required)
- Working knowledge of P25 LMR system architecture, including how site, core, and console components rely on microwave and IP transport.
- Experience supporting a Motorola ASTRO 25 system or similar P25 system alongside an OEM or prime maintenance provider.
- Ability to isolate faults between transport and radio systems and work effectively with vendor engineering teams.
Leadership & Communication (Required)
- Demonstrated experience leading technical teams and mentoring junior technicians.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills. Able to interface professionally with government clients, vendor teams, and contractor personnel.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in an operationally driven environment.
