Job Title: Embedded Firmware Engineer

Position Type: Contract

Location: CA — On-site

Salary Rate: $100–$190/hr (USD)

Job ID#: 175938

Job Description:

We are seeking a hands-on Embedded Firmware Engineer with strong ROS2 and robotics software experience to support the integration of robotic sensing systems with their host compute platforms. In this role, you will develop and maintain software for real-time sensor streaming, GPU-accelerated image processing, and data collection infrastructure used in robotics development.

This position operates in a fast-paced robotics R&D environment where technical requirements may evolve as products move from early-stage concepts toward reliable systems running on real hardware. The ideal candidate combines strong engineering fundamentals with practical, hands-on experience building and troubleshooting embedded or robotic systems.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and maintain ROS2 nodes for robotic sensor modules, including cameras, depth sensors (dToF), and IMUs.
  • Develop and optimize GPU-accelerated de-Bayer and image-processing pipelines for real-time sensor data.
  • Integrate camera and sensor vendor SDKs into ROS2 packages to enable maintainable and reproducible builds.
  • Build and maintain reliable data collection infrastructure for robotics development, testing, and evaluation.
  • Perform end-to-end latency characterization, troubleshooting, and performance optimization across sensing and compute pipelines.
  • Record, replay, and analyze robotic sensor data using tools such as rosbag2.
  • Collaborate closely with research engineers and scientists to translate evolving technical concepts into robust software running on physical robotic systems.
  • Support system-level integration and troubleshooting across sensors, embedded compute platforms, and robotics software.

Requirements:

  • 5+ years of software development experience using modern programming languages, particularly C++ and/or Python.
  • Hands-on ROS2 development experience, including building and maintaining nodes, topics, services, and launch systems.
  • Experience integrating and streaming real-time sensor data, such as cameras, depth sensors, or IMUs, on robotic or embedded systems.
  • Experience with robotics data pipeline tools such as rosbag2 for recording, playback, and analysis.
  • Strong engineering fundamentals with the ability to troubleshoot complex hardware/software integration issues.
  • Ability to work effectively in an R&D or product-development environment with evolving technical requirements.
  • Ability to work on-site in Sunnyvale, CA.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with GPU-accelerated image processing, including CUDA, de-Bayer processing, or similar real-time vision pipelines.
  • Experience deploying software on embedded GPU compute platforms, such as NVIDIA Jetson-class devices.
  • Experience with ROS1-to-ROS2 migration, DDS, and QoS tuning for real-time performance.
  • Experience packaging and integrating third-party or vendor SDKs into robotics or embedded software stacks.
  • Experience supporting robotics, applied science, or research teams with data collection and system integration infrastructure.
  • Experience performing end-to-end latency analysis and optimization across sensing and compute pipelines.
  • Experience taking robotics or embedded systems from prototype development toward production-ready implementation.
