Pave Talent is hiring on behalf of our client for an embedded Linux engineer who owns the operating system layer end to end: kernel, board support package (BSP), networking, build system, and the automation around all of it.
Our client is a venture-backed robotics company of roughly 150 to 250 people building rugged autonomous ground robots for industrial inspection, critical infrastructure, energy, and public safety work. They ship hardware to paying customers today, and engineering is interdisciplinary: software, controls, electrical, and mechanical engineers sit together and debug the same robot.
Engineers comfortable below the application layer: kernel configs, device trees, boot failures, and hardware that does not behave the way the datasheet says
People who want to own a platform rather than maintain a fleet of servers
Engineers who like being in the lab with the hardware in front of them, not reasoning about it through a dashboard
Strong writers who document system architecture so other teams can use it
If your Linux background is mainly cloud infrastructure, Kubernetes, or site reliability engineering (SRE), this is not your role. The work here is embedded, on real hardware, on-site.
This is the operating system seat for the entire product, not one of a dozen. You set how every board gets built, flashed, networked, and debugged, and every other engineering team depends on what you define.
You own embedded Linux across multiple hardware platforms, including NVIDIA Jetson modules and their JetPack software development kits (SDKs)
You work directly with hardware engineering, software, and quality assurance (QA), not through a ticket queue
Your work gets validated in the field, not only in continuous integration (CI)
The platform is still being shaped, so your architecture decisions stick
Custom kernel patching, configuration, compilation, and lifecycle maintenance across several hardware platforms
Board support packages and device tree source (DTS) work for new compute and sensor hardware
The build environment: cross-compilation toolchains, dependency and package management, reproducible images
Linux networking on the robot: routing, bridges, interfaces, and firewalling with iptables and nftables
Root-cause analysis on kernel panics, boot failures, and performance bottlenecks using gdb, strace, perf, Valgrind, dmesg, and journalctl
Automation for software deployment, system validation testing, and routine maintenance
Technical documentation other engineers actually use
This is five days a week on-site in Philadelphia. No remote, no hybrid, and the role genuinely requires it, because the hardware is in the building. Plenty of the work is unglamorous: a board will not boot, an image will not build, an interface drops under load, and you are the person who finds out why. The bar is high and the technical process is real, including live coding, so come ready to work through problems out loud.
Strong programming in C++ and Python, plus advanced Bash scripting
Deep hands-on experience administering and troubleshooting headless Linux from the command line
Custom Linux kernel work: patching, configuration, compilation, and maintenance
Source-based or custom distributions such as the Yocto Project, Gentoo, or Arch Linux, alongside Ubuntu or Debian
Fluency with gdb, strace, dmesg, journalctl, perf, and Valgrind
Advanced Git and collaborative version control workflows
Clear written and verbal communication, including the ability to document complex system architecture
Permanent U.S. residency, and the ability to clear standard background checks before and during employment
NVIDIA Jetson architectures, JetPack SDKs, and board support packages
CMake, Make, or Ninja
Embedded Linux in CI pipelines with GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, or Jenkins
Docker or systemd-nspawn for embedded environments
Low-level hardware interfaces: I2C, SPI, UART, GPIO, and DTS modification

Annual variable compensation averaging at least 15% of base salary, prorated in your first year
Included, on top of base and bonus
Assessed case by case, based on where you are moving from and family size
Full medical coverage and a flexible time off policy
Full-time, on-site in Philadelphia, five days a week
None required. Domestic and international field opportunities exist for engineers who want them.
