What they need

At Tata Technologies, we make product development dreams a reality by designing, engineering, and validating the products of tomorrow for the world’s leading manufacturers. Due to our continued growth, we are now recruiting for a Embedded SW Architecture Engineer to join our team in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The role

Powertrain Strategic Development (PSD) is a multi-disciplinary system team working with early-phase and concept development. The portfolio covers engine design, combustion systems, 1D/3D simulation, engine aftertreatment systems, software controls, calibration, testing and verification, and method development. The organization develops mostly, but not limited to, pre-mixed combustion concepts, including spark-ignited engines, and has a strong focus on alternative fuels such as hydrogen and natural gas. The consultant will work across disciplines and interfaces, connecting strategic development, product engineering, software platforms, test environments, suppliers, research partners, and relevant stakeholders across the organization.

Responsibilities

  • You will act as a senior technical authority for model-based control and embedded software architecture for spark-ignited ICE applications, particularly H2 ICE.
  • The assignment covers functional development from requirement breakdown and system engineering through software design, implementation, integration, testing, verification, calibration, documentation, and release-readiness assessment.
  • The consultant is expected to lead technical work within the team, integrate deliveries from other contributors, secure quality and maturity, and support technical roadmaps for early-phase concepts.
  • A key part of the assignment is to improve development speed and robustness through automated software development, automated testing and verification, automated calibration workflows, and efficient analysis of engine test-bench data.
  • You will also identify and demonstrate relevant uses of physics-inspired AI/ML, combining first-principles models, engineering constraints, and data-driven methods for control, modelling, diagnostics, optimization, and calibration.
  • Deliver a scalable SI/H2 ICE control software concept and architecture, including a practical roadmap for automation and physics-inspired AI/ML applications.
  • Develop and integrate calibratable ECU functions for air-path, torque, combustion, knock detection and knock control, including interfaces to sensors, actuators, diagnostics, and the powertrain software platform.
  • Establish or improve toolchains for model-based development, code generation, continuous integration, automated testing, data processing, and calibration optimization.
  • Provide technical leadership, design reviews, documentation, knowledge transfer, and clear recommendations to the assignment owner and relevant engineering teams.

Background / Experience

  • M.Sc., PhD, or equivalent expertise in control engineering, mechatronics, electronics, automation, applied physics, mechanical engineering, or another relevant powertrain field.
  • Typically 12+ years of relevant experience in powertrain, embedded systems, or automotive product development, with recognized senior-expert standing.
  • Senior-expert competence in model-based control systems for spark-ignited combustion engines, including requirement breakdown, control concept development, modelling, implementation, integration, verification, and calibration.
  • Deep knowledge of ECU function development, air-path-controlled engines, torque modelling, combustion control, knock detection, knock control, and relevant engine sensors and actuators.
  • Strong experience in embedded software design and architecture, AUTOSAR Classic, software integration, diagnostics, communication protocols, and safe and secure development in accordance with ISO 26262 and SAE 21434.
  • Proven ability to secure quality and readiness through SIL, HIL, engine test-bench testing, verification, data analysis, and traceable technical documentation.
  • Hands-on experience in automated software development and automated testing, including model-based workflows, code generation, scripting, continuous integration, and toolchain automation.
  • Proven experience in ECU calibration and automated calibration, including test planning, measurement-data processing, optimization, verification, and repeatable workflows.
  • Advanced working knowledge of MATLAB/Simulink, Python, ATI Vision and/or AVL Concerto; experience with ETAS INCA, ETAS ASCMO, TargetLink, and C/C++ is relevant where applicable.
  • Ability to lead system engineering in a technical team, integrate deliveries from others, influence stakeholders across sites and organizations, and communicate recommendations clearly in spoken and written English.
  • A self-driven, result-oriented, collaborative, and pragmatic mindset, with the ability to take initiative, work at pace, solve problems creatively, assume responsibility, and actively support colleagues.

Meritorious

  • Development or calibration experience with hydrogen, natural gas, or other pre-mixed spark-ignited heavy-duty engines.
  • Demonstrated use of physics-inspired AI/ML, hybrid modelling, physics-informed learning, virtual sensing, anomaly detection, optimization, or data-driven control in safety- or performance-critical systems.
  • Experience with AI/ML-augmented software architecture and engineering workflows, including methods that improve development, testing, calibration, or engineering decision support.
  • Knowledge of software-defined vehicle architectures and their interfaces to embedded powertrain control, including AUTOSAR Adaptive or relevant RTOS-based alternatives.
  • Experience with powertrain software development, calibration, verification toolchains, and working methods.
  • Evidence of thought leadership through technical roadmaps, patents, publications, standardization, external networks, or recognized contributions to education and competence development.
