Embedded Test Engineer-Production & R&D Validation

Role & responsibilities

• R&D / NPI bring up new prototype boards, write ATPs and test cases from schematics and specs, run regression across board revisions and ECN changes, support EVT / DVT / PVT and stress testing (thermal, vibration, ESD, soak).
• Production own product testing on the line FCT, burn-in, first-article and final QA inspection; operate and troubleshoot test jigs and fixtures; track First Pass Yield and defect Pareto; drive corrective action with design and process teams.
• Failure analysis handle DOA, RMA and field returns; analyse to component level and issue RCA / 8D closure reports.
• Linux testing debug over serial console U-Boot, kernel boot logs, dmesg, rootfs failures; flash eMMC / SD / NAND images and validate upgrade / OTA; validate peripherals from userspace using i2c-tools, spidev, libgpiod, can-utils, lsusb, MMC, RTC and watchdog; verify device-tree configuration against actual hardware.
• Network & connectivity ip, ping, iperf, tcpdump; Wi-Fi / BLE bring-up, 4G-LTE AT-command validation, Ethernet throughput and link stability.
• Automation — shell and Python scripts for repetitive test sequences, log parsing, CSV result logging and long-duration soak tests; scripts and reports maintained under Git.
• Documentation & training — SOPs, work instructions, test travellers and operator training; ESD and workmanship compliance.

Must Have skills

• Deep hardware knowledge — strong analog & digital fundamentals, power supplies (AC-DC, buck, boost, flyback, LDO), schematic-driven debug down to component level.
• R&D + production — must have worked on prototype / new product boards AND in a manufacturing test environment — not one only.
• Embedded Linux — strong command-line skills; can read boot and kernel logs and tell whether a failure is hardware, driver or firmware.
• Scripting — shell mandatory; Python for test automation strongly preferred.
• Protocols — I2C, SPI, UART, RS232, RS485, CAN, USB, Ethernet — at signal level and Linux userspace level.
• Silicon & memory — ARM Cortex-A SoC (i.MX6 or similar), Cortex-M MCUs, DDR, eMMC, flash, EEPROM.
• Instruments — DSO, DMM, LCR, DC electronic load, power supply, thermal imager; basic spectrum analyzer.
• Rework — SMD and through-hole soldering and board-level rework.
• Documentation — ATP, test reports, SOPs and RCA / 8D reports of customer-shareable quality.

Good to Have

• Test jig / fixture design input — bed-of-nails, pogo-pin fixtures.
• Yocto / Buildroot awareness, device-tree edits, basic driver-level debugging.
• Camera / vision validation — v4l2-ctl, media-ctl, MIPI-CSI, CCD / CMOS sensors and ISP.
• EMI / EMC pre-compliance, IPC-A-610, ISO 9001 exposure.
• Altium — multilayer schematic and PCB reading.
