What they need

Job Purpose

The Endoscopy Nurse/ODP provides safe, high-quality, patient-centred care across the full endoscopy patient pathway — admissions and pre-assessment, the procedure room (both direct patient care and technical assisting), recovery, discharge, decontamination and water-quality compliance. All postholders are expected to meet the core (Tier 1) performance standards set out in this job description as a condition of the role.

This job description also sets out a Senior (Tier 2) tier of performance indicators. These describe what ‘senior practice’ looks like for an experienced Registered General Nurse (RGN) or Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) in this role: the ability to take charge of the clinical area and troubleshoot staffing pressures, ownership of stock and resource management, leadership of audits and quality improvement, mentorship of junior staff, and deputising for the Team Leader. Sustained, evidenced achievement of the Tier 2 indicators is the basis on which LivingCare recognises a postholder as a Senior Endoscopy Nurse/ODP, informs appraisal and development conversations, and supports progression or banding decisions in line with local policy.

KPI & Performance Framework

Performance in this role is assessed against two tiers of KPI. Tier 1 KPIs are the non-negotiable core standard for every postholder. Tier 2 KPIs are the indicators used to identify, develop and formally recognise Senior Endoscopy Nurses/ODPs, and are reviewed at appraisal alongside a portfolio of evidence.

Tier 1 — Core Performance Standards (all postholders)

Category

KPI / Standard

Target

Patient Assessment

Completes and documents pre-procedure assessment (consent, fasting, allergies, risk screening) for every allocated patient.

100% compliance, quarterly audit

Patient Safety

Completes and documents a safety WHO checklist for every procedure commenced.

100% compliance, quarterly audit

Patient Experience

Records a comfort/pain score for every sedated or unsedated procedure and escalates/documents any moderate or severe discomfort.

Documents actions taken to resolve discomfort.

100% compliance, quarterly audit

Infection Prevention

Maintains full decontamination and scope-traceability documentation with no avoidable breaches.

100% compliance, annual IHEEM audit

Recovery & Discharge

Completes post-procedure observations and applies discharge criteria before any patient leaves the department.

100% compliance, quarterly audit

Record Keeping

Completes procedure documentation and endoscopy reporting system entries accurately, at the time of event.

100% compliance, quarterly audit

Professional Standards

Maintains professional registration/revalidation, 100% compliance with mandatory training and JETS competency Level 1 completion within 1 year of employment.

100% compliance, quarterly audit

Incident Reporting

Reports patient safety incidents, near misses and equipment faults via the local incident system.

100% compliance, quarterly audit

Tier 2 — Senior Practice Indicators (Senior Endoscopy Nurse/ODP)

Consistent achievement of the indicators below, evidenced through appraisal, audit output, incident/Datix records, mentorship logs and peer feedback, is what distinguishes a Senior Endoscopy Nurse/ODP from a core postholder.

KPI / Standard

Target / Frequency

Taking Charge & Staffing Resilience

Takes charge of the unit or an individual list in the absence of the Team Leader/Deputy Team Leader, including real-time troubleshooting of staffing shortfalls (sickness, skill-mix gaps, list overruns), safe redeployment of staff, and escalation and resolution of issues.

Zero unfilled safety-critical roles on shift; unresolved staffing risk escalated to management the same shift

Stock & Resource Management

Participates in / owns stock control for an assigned area: ordering, rotation, expiry-date checks and minimising waste; liaises with procurement, estates and decontamination on equipment faults and servicing.

<2% stock wastage/expiry; faults logged within 24 hours

Audit, Quality & Governance

Leads or co-leads clinical audits (e.g. safety checklist compliance, decontamination, comfort scores) and contributes to incident reviews, driving completion of resulting action plans.

≥1 completed audit cycle per year; ≥95% of assigned actions closed on time

Mentorship & Education

Acts as mentor/preceptor for junior staff, students and new starters; leads or contributes to induction and competency sign-off.

Actively mentors ≥2 junior staff/students per year; sign-offs completed to agreed timescale

Deputising & Patient Flow

Deputises for the Team Leader/Deputy as required; co-ordinates list scheduling, patient flow and escalates capacity pressures.

No unescalated safety incidents while deputising; list utilisation/turnaround targets met

Leadership & Role Modelling

Role-models best practice and positivity, gives constructive feedback to colleagues, and actively supports service improvement or new pathway implementation.

Positive appraisal/peer feedback, reviewed at each annual appraisal

How Tier 2 is evidenced: postholders working towards or maintaining Senior status should keep a simple portfolio — audit reports authored/co-authored, examples of staffing/troubleshooting decisions taken while in charge, mentorship/sign-off records, reflective accounts, and stock or governance responsibilities held — for review at appraisal.
