Job Overview

Join our dynamic team as an Energy Engineering Intern and gain hands-on experience working on real-world building energy efficiency and compliance projects throughout New York City. You will work alongside experienced engineers and project managers on projects involving Local Law 87 (LL87), Local Law 88 (LL88), HVAC systems, lighting upgrades, energy audits, building assessments, and other energy-efficiency initiatives.

This paid internship provides an excellent opportunity to develop practical engineering skills, participate in field inspections, analyze building energy systems, and support the preparation of technical reports and compliance documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Assist engineers with Local Law 87 (LL87) Energy Audits and Retro-Commissioning (RCx) projects, including field inspections, data collection, equipment assessments, and documentation.

  • Support inspections and compliance assessments for Local Law 88 (LL88), including lighting systems, lighting controls, occupancy sensors, and electrical submetering.

  • Assist with HVAC system assessments, including boilers, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, air-handling units, fan coil units, controls, and associated equipment.

  • Participate in building energy assessments and identify opportunities to improve energy efficiency, operational performance, and building energy grades.

  • Assist with lighting upgrade projects, including fixture surveys, LED retrofit assessments, occupancy sensor assessments, fixture counts, and energy savings calculations.

  • Collect and organize field data, equipment information, photographs, utility information, and building operating data for engineering analysis and reporting.

  • Assist engineers in developing Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs) and recommendations for HVAC, lighting, controls, building envelope, and other energy-efficiency improvements.

  • Support energy savings and GHG emissions reduction calculations for proposed energy conservation measures.

  • Assist with preparation of LL87 Energy Audit and Retro-Commissioning reports, field forms, equipment schedules, deficiency logs, and supporting documentation.

  • Assist with Local Law 88 compliance documentation, including lighting and lighting-control assessments and project closeout documentation.

  • Review mechanical and electrical equipment conditions and document deficiencies, maintenance opportunities, and recommended improvements.

  • Assist with commissioning and retro-commissioning activities, including equipment testing, operational reviews, trend analysis, and verification of system performance.

  • Support engineers with HVAC and lighting project proposals, scopes of work, quantity takeoffs, and preliminary cost and savings estimates.

  • Use Excel and other engineering tools to organize field data, perform calculations, analyze energy consumption, and prepare project deliverables.

  • Assist with preparation of CAD drawings, equipment layouts, lighting plans, and other technical documentation when required.

  • Coordinate with project managers, engineers, contractors, property managers, and building representatives to support project execution.

  • Participate in field inspections at commercial, multifamily, and other building types throughout New York City.

  • Maintain organized project files, photographs, field notes, equipment schedules, and supporting documentation.

  • Assist with research and interpretation of applicable NYC energy codes, Local Laws, ASHRAE standards, and energy-efficiency requirements.

  • Support other HVAC, lighting, energy-efficiency, sustainability, and building assessment projects as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Energy Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.

  • Strong interest in building energy efficiency, HVAC systems, lighting systems, sustainability, and energy engineering.

  • Basic understanding of HVAC systems, electrical systems, building energy systems, or mechanical equipment.

  • Familiarity with Excel and ability to organize and analyze engineering data.

  • Familiarity with AutoCAD or other CAD software is preferred.

  • Coursework or experience related to thermodynamics, heat transfer, HVAC, electrical systems, energy management, or building science is preferred.

  • Interest in or familiarity with ASHRAE standards, NYC Local Laws, energy codes, and building energy-efficiency practices is a plus.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.

  • Ability to read and understand basic mechanical, electrical, and architectural drawings.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with engineers and project managers.

  • Willingness to travel to building sites throughout New York City and the surrounding area for field inspections.

  • Ability to work in a professional environment and interact effectively with clients, contractors, building staff, and other project stakeholders.

What You Will Gain

This paid internship provides practical exposure to building energy engineering, NYC Local Law compliance, HVAC systems, lighting upgrades, energy audits, retro-commissioning, and energy-efficiency projects. Interns will have the opportunity to develop skills in field inspections, engineering analysis, energy calculations, technical reporting, project coordination, and client communication while working alongside experienced engineering professionals.
