Engineer – COBOL Systems Engineer

Role Purpose

Provide technical development, maintenance and production support for business-critical COBOL applications running on Micro Focus and Linux platforms. The role ensures application stability, reliable batch and online processing, accurate data, timely incident resolution and controlled delivery of fixes and enhancements.

Key Responsibilities

COBOL Application Engineering

• Develop, maintain and enhance COBOL programs, copybooks, interfaces and supporting components.

• Analyse functional requirements and translate them into secure, maintainable technical solutions.

• Perform unit testing, impact analysis, peer review and implementation support for application changes.

• Maintain technical specifications, operational procedures and application support documentation.

Micro Focus and Linux Platform Support

• Support COBOL applications deployed through Micro Focus Enterprise Server or Enterprise Developer environments.

• Monitor application services, runtime errors, logs, processes, file systems and resource utilisation on Linux.

• Troubleshoot runtime, configuration, deployment and performance issues using appropriate diagnostic tools.

• Develop and maintain shell scripts to automate operational, monitoring and support activities.

Data Integrity and Reconciliation

• Investigate data discrepancies, file-handling issues and failed or incomplete transaction processing.

• Execute data validation, reconciliation and controlled remediation activities.

• Implement preventive controls to preserve the accuracy, completeness and consistency of transactional data.

• Provide evidence and technical support for audit, compliance and operational control reviews.

Production Operations and Incident Management

• Monitor and support online services, batch cycles, scheduled jobs and downstream interfaces.

• Resolve incidents within agreed service levels and perform root-cause analysis for recurring problems.

• Participate in release, change, patching, disaster recovery and business continuity activities.

• Provide on-call and out-of-hours support when required for critical production services.

Required Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering or a related discipline.

• 3–7 years of hands-on experience in COBOL development and application support.

• Practical experience with Micro Focus COBOL, Enterprise Server or Enterprise Developer.

• Strong working knowledge of Linux/Unix environments and shell scripting.

• Experience supporting mission-critical production systems, preferably within payments, card processing, banking or financial services.
