What they need

The Engineer-in-Training, Production Engineering (Bluenose Team), plays a key role in bringing Canada’s most advanced ships to life by developing innovative engineering solutions that enable safe, efficient, and high-quality ship construction. This position drives production success through the creation of detailed Manufacturing Instructions (MIs) for complex installation activities, the review and approval of Vendor Furnished Information (VFI), and the evaluation of production drawings to ensure accuracy and constructability.

The Engineer-in-Training also designs and drafts custom jigs, fixtures, and templates that support efficient production, while planning and executing engineering test programs that help introduce new products, technologies, and processes to the shipyard. Working closely with cross-functional teams, this role combines technical expertise, creativity, and problem-solving to continuously improve how ships are built and delivered.

  • Develop Manufacturing Instructions, jigs, fixtures, and templates for the River-Class Destroyer Program.

  • Review, approve, and socialize Operations (OPS) Vendor Furnished Information (VFI) including Installation Instructions and Care and Protection Instructions.

  • Reviewing Production Drawings for accuracy and constructability.

  • Engage with internal business stakeholders including Production, Planning, Facilities, Platform/Combat Engineering, Scheduling, and Supply Chain.

  • Identify opportunities for Continuous Improvement within their Engineering Discipline.

  • Identify and manage mitigation plans for risks associated with their Engineering Discipline.

  • Bachelor of Engineering (B. Eng.) or equivalent, eligible to register as Engineer in Training (EIT) with Engineers Nova Scotia

  • Basic understanding of Shipbuilding production, planning, material requirements, facility and resource capacity.

  • Demonstrated ability to read blueprints, navigate 3D model and/or simulations, develop & markup drawings, develop presentations and reports, develop technical specifications, perform investigation on complex issues.

  • Proficiency with AutoCad (2D/3D), MS Office suite and Adobe Pro.

  • Knowledge and genuine interest of naval / modern ship design and construction methods.

Due to the nature of work Irving Shipbuilding does, all successful applicants must meet requirements for the Canadian Controlled Goods Program (CGP), Canadian Government Security clearance, and U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).

Please note this position requires a full-time, in-office presence.
