Engineer Manager

Job Title: Engineering Manager (Backend Heavy)

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the design, development, and delivery of scalable, secure, and high-performance backend services and APIs.
• Own backend architecture decisions across Node.js and Go-based services, with a strong focus on maintainability and scalability.
• Design and manage distributed systems and microservices running in containerised environments using Kubernetes.
• Build and operate event-driven architectures using Kafka and AWS SQS for asynchronous processing, messaging, and reliable workflows.
• Design and maintain real-time communication systems using WebSockets/sockets for low-latency product experiences.
• Drive system design, technical specifications, code quality, reviews, testing standards, and engineering best practices.
• Lead troubleshooting of production issues, performance bottlenecks, service failures, and scalability challenges.
• Define and improve engineering processes, deployment practices, observability, monitoring, and operational reliability.
• Mentor engineers, provide technical direction, conduct code/design reviews, and support career and capability development.
• Work closely with Product, Design, QA, DevOps, and business stakeholders to translate requirements into reliable technical solutions.
• Own delivery timelines for engineering initiatives and proactively identify technical risks, dependencies, and resource requirements.

Experience & Qualifications

• 7-8 years of professional experience in backend engineering, software development, or a similar technology role, with relevant engineering leadership experience.
• Strong hands-on experience with Node.js and/or Go for building production-grade backend services and APIs.
• Strong understanding of Kubernetes and experience operating or deploying containerised backend applications.
• Practical experience with Kafka and event-driven architectures, including producers, consumers, partitions, offsets, and message processing patterns.
• Hands-on understanding of AWS SQS or similar queue-based asynchronous processing systems.
• Experience building real-time systems using WebSockets, Socket.IO, or comparable socket-based technologies.
• Strong understanding of system design, scalability, concurrency, fault tolerance, service communication, and distributed systems.
• Experience handling production systems, incident resolution, monitoring, performance optimisation, and reliability improvements.
• Experience mentoring engineers and leading technical initiatives while remaining comfortable with hands-on engineering work.
• Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively with Product, QA, DevOps, and other cross-functional teams.
