What they need
Engineer – Otis Instruments
Otis Instruments has designed and manufactured gas detection equipment in Texas since 1983. From our headquarters in Bryan, minutes from Texas A&M, we build wired and WireFree (wireless) fixed gas detection and monitoring systems for toxic, combustible, oxygen, and carbon dioxide gases.
We pioneered WireFree gas detection in 2005. Our detectors and controllers protect workers in oil and gas, wastewater, manufacturing, food and beverage, laboratories, and medical facilities. When our products work, people go home safe at the end of the day.
Position Summary
We are hiring a well-rounded Engineer who can take a product from concept to production. You will work across electrical, mechanical, and software design on our gas detectors, controllers, and wireless systems.
This is a hands-on role on a small team. You will design circuits, model enclosures, write embedded firmware, build prototypes, and support the production floor, often in the same week. If you like owning the whole product and seeing your work in the field, this role is for you.
Key Responsibilities
**Product Design and Development**
Lead new gas detection products and improvements from concept through prototype, testing, and release to production
Turn customer and market needs into clear specifications and design requirements
Build and test prototypes, then troubleshoot and refine designs based on results
**Electrical Engineering**
Design analog and digital circuits, including sensor interfaces, power supplies, battery and solar power, and 4-20 mA and RS-485 Modbus communication
Create schematics and multilayer PCB layouts, and select components for cost, availability, and reliability
Integrate and test wireless radio modules (900 MHz and 2.4 GHz)
Debug hardware using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multimeters, and power supplies
**Mechanical Engineering**
Design enclosures, mounting hardware, and assemblies in 3D CAD, including explosion-proof and harsh-environment housings
Produce manufacturing drawings with appropriate tolerances, and work with machine shops, molders, and suppliers
Use 3D printing and rapid prototyping to test fit, form, and function
**Software and Firmware**
Write, test, and maintain embedded C/C++ firmware for microcontroller-based detectors and controllers
Develop sensor signal processing, calibration routines, alarm logic, and communication protocols
Build PC or mobile tools for configuration, data logging, and production testing
**Compliance, Manufacturing, and Support**
Support certification and testing for hazardous-location and safety standards (such as UL, CSA, ATEX, IECEx, and FCC)
Write and maintain documentation: BOMs, test procedures, assembly instructions, and engineering change orders
Support production with test fixtures, root-cause analysis, and process improvements
Help sales and customer service with technical questions and field issues
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Computer, or Electronic Systems Engineering, or a related field
3+ years of product design experience (internships, co-ops, and senior design projects count for entry-level applicants)
Hands-on experience in at least two of these three areas, with interest in learning the third: electrical/PCB design, mechanical/3D CAD design, embedded software
Proficiency with schematic and PCB tools (such as Altium, KiCad, or OrCAD)
Proficiency with 3D CAD (such as SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or Inventor)
Embedded programming in C or C++ on microcontrollers
Comfort with lab equipment and hands-on prototyping, soldering, and troubleshooting
Clear written and verbal communication, and the ability to manage multiple projects
Authorization to work in the United States
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with gas sensors (electrochemical, catalytic bead, infrared, or PID) or other industrial instrumentation
Experience with RF and wireless design, low-power battery devices, or solar-powered systems
Knowledge of hazardous-location requirements (Class I Div 1/2, ATEX, IECEx) and product certification
Familiarity with industrial protocols such as Modbus RTU/TCP and 4-20 mA loops
Experience with PC or mobile application development (C#, Python, or similar)
Background in oil and gas, industrial safety, or other harsh-environment products
Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) license
What We Offer
Competitive salary: [Based on experience]
Health, dental, and vision insurance
401(k)
Paid time off and paid holidays
Ownership of products from first sketch to the field, with direct impact on worker safety
A small, collaborative team where your ideas are heard and built
Professional development and support for certifications
A stable company with 40+ years in the industry, located in the Bryan–College Station area
How to Apply
Submit your resume through this posting. We welcome a short note or portfolio link showing projects you designed, especially ones that combined hardware, mechanical, and software work.
