Summary of the role

Primary Focus & Responsibilities

The consultant's work will be narrowly focused on the core document authoring experience, not general UI internationalization.

• Technical Audit & Gap Analysis: Conduct a deep technical review of our word processing and spreadsheet functionalities to identify the root causes of current CJK support gaps.

• Problem Solving & Strategy: Provide actionable, expert-level recommendations and solution strategies for specific, known issues reported by customers. The goal is to move the development team beyond a "guess-and-check" approach.

• Enable the Team: Consult directly with our core engineering teams to transfer knowledge and help them understand the nuances of APAC font technology and document standards.

• Prioritization: Help the team prioritize the backlog of CJK-related technical debt and new features required to support the upcoming Japanese XBRL use case.

• Tooling & Frameworks: Recommend specific libraries, patterns, or frameworks that can solve complex problems related to font rendering, character input (IME), and document export (e.g., PDF).

Required Expertise ‍

This role requires more than general internationalization experience; it demands a specialist.

• Core Technical Skills: Deep expertise in CJK font files and rendering engines. This includes understanding issues like faux font emphasis, character encoding, typography, and embedding fonts in exported files like PDFs.

• Platform Experience: Demonstrable experience working with complex, cloud-based content authoring tools (e.g., word processors, spreadsheets).

• Multibyte Character Sets: A profound understanding of how multibyte characters behave throughout a platform, from data entry and storage to rendering on screen.

• Consulting Mindset: Ability to effectively diagnose complex technical problems and clearly communicate solutions to an engineering team that lacks this specific domain knowledge.

Engagement Details & Urgency ️

• Duration: The engagement will be fast-tracked, likely structured as a 4 to 6-week intensive project in upcoming month to ensure timely impact.

We are seeking a hyper-specialized consultant for a short-term, high-impact engagement focused on resolving deep technical challenges within our document platform. The primary objective is to address the final, most complex 10% of issues preventing a native-quality experience for users working with CJK (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) languages, thereby securing key APAC customers and enabling future growth.
