JOB DESCRIPTION RF ATE TEST ENGINEER

Department: Test Development Services (TDS)
Function: Semiconductor Test Development / IC Testing
Location: Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India
Experience: 3–14 Years
Position Code: RF_01 : RF ATE Test Engineer (3-5 Years exp. )

Position Code: RF_02 : Sr RF ATE Test Engineer (5-14 years)
Employment Type: Full-Time

1. Job Purpose

To develop, debug, characterize, and optimize Automated Test Equipment (ATE) test solutions for RF, Analog, and Mixed-Signal semiconductor devices. The role will support the complete product lifecycle, from first-silicon bring-up and characterization to production test release, yield improvement, and high-volume manufacturing.

2. Key Responsibilities

A. ATE Test Development

  • Develop, debug, and optimize production test programs for RF, Analog, and Mixed-Signal ICs.
  • Design and implement test solutions using Advantest V93K (SmarTest 8 preferred) or Teradyne UltraFLEX/J750 platforms.
  • Develop and maintain test methodologies to ensure accurate, repeatable, and reliable device measurements.
  • Support test program optimization, test coverage improvement, and production test-time reduction.

B. Product Characterization and Validation

  • Support first-silicon bring-up, device characterization, production test development, qualification, and production release.

  • Execute characterization across Process, Voltage, and Temperature (PVT) conditions.

  • Develop and characterize RF, Analog, and Mixed-Signal circuit blocks, including:

  • Phase-Locked Loops (PLLs)

  • Analog-to-Digital Converters (ADCs)

  • Digital-to-Analog Converters (DACs)

  • Oscillators and timing devices

  • Power management circuits

  • RF transceivers and related IPs

  • Correlate ATE measurements with laboratory bench measurements and validation results.

C. RF Measurement and Data Analysis

  • Perform RF characterization and testing involving frequency, output power, phase noise, harmonics, linearity, and sensitivity, as applicable to the device under test.
  • Analyze characterization data and identify performance trends, outliers, and potential failure mechanisms.
  • Use data analysis tools such as Excel, MATLAB, Python, or JMP to support engineering decisions.

D. Debugging and Yield Improvement

  • Investigate test failures, perform root-cause analysis, and implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Drive yield improvement, test coverage enhancement, and product quality initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities to optimize test time and reduce manufacturing costs without compromising quality or reliability.
  • Support production ramp-up and resolve ATE-related issues in high-volume manufacturing environments.

E. Cross-Functional Collaboration and Documentation

  • Collaborate with Design, Product Engineering, Validation, Applications, and Manufacturing teams throughout the product development cycle.
  • Prepare test specifications, characterization reports, test documentation, and production release packages.
  • Support product qualification, release readiness, and ongoing manufacturing improvements.

3. Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, or a related discipline.

  • 3–7 years of relevant experience in semiconductor ATE test development, preferably involving RF, Analog, or Mixed-Signal products.

  • Hands-on experience with at least one of the following ATE platforms:

  • Advantest V93K – SmarTest 8 preferred

  • Teradyne UltraFLEX / J750

  • Strong understanding of RF fundamentals, analog and digital electronics, mixed-signal testing, and semiconductor device characterization.

  • Practical experience in RF measurement and characterization techniques.

  • Familiarity with production test development, device characterization, and test program debugging.

  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.

  • Effective communication and collaboration skills for working in cross-functional engineering teams.

4. Preferred Skills

  • Experience testing RF ICs, PLLs, oscillators, transceivers, wireless connectivity devices, or timing products.
  • Knowledge of RF bench instruments and measurement techniques, where applicable.
  • Understanding of semiconductor product engineering, manufacturing processes, and production release requirements.
  • Experience in statistical data analysis, yield improvement, and systematic failure analysis.
  • Exposure to test-time optimization, cost reduction, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Programming or data analysis experience using Python, MATLAB, Excel, or JMP.

5. Key Competencies

  • ATE Test Program Development and Debugging
  • RF and Mixed-Signal Characterization
  • Semiconductor Test Methodologies
  • Data Analysis and Technical Problem-Solving
  • Root-Cause Analysis and Yield Improvement
  • Test-Time Optimization
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Documentation and Process Discipline

6. Performance Expectations

Success in this role will be demonstrated through:

  • Timely development, debugging, and release of production-ready ATE test programs.
  • Improved test coverage, measurement accuracy, and test repeatability.
  • Effective characterization and correlation of ATE and bench results.
  • Measurable contributions to yield improvement and test-time optimization.
  • Timely resolution of production test issues and adherence to product quality requirements.

7. Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is a hands-on semiconductor test professional with practical ATE programming and debugging experience, a strong foundation in RF and Mixed-Signal electronics, and the ability to support product characterization through production ramp-up.
