What they need
Geotechnical, Earthquake and Dam Specialists.
At EGL, we strive to see beyond. We are a New Zealand based, engineer-led consultancy with a strong focus on technical excellence and tackling highly complex problems.
Our projects are large; some spanning multiple decades and requiring deep technical judgment, continuity and close collaboration with clients and project partners.
Our team brings specialist dam engineering expertise, alongside broad experience across infrastructure, water, commercial, and land development sectors. We take pride in being close to the design, owning the technical thinking, and helping shape solutions from early advice through to construction. We encourage our people to think deeply, build strong technical capability, and understand our clients' drivers so we can deliver solutions that combine technical rigour with practical judgement that endure. At EGL, learning and growth never stops.
As we continue to grow, we are seeking engineering geologists to join our team based in Auckland, Christchurch and Waihi.
The opportunity
This role will suit an engineering geologist with two to six years' experience who wants to be out in the field, wants to run their own jobs rather than be handed tasks, and is ready to take responsibility for the ground model that our designs are built on.
You will plan and supervise ground investigations across New Zealand, log soil and rock to a standard that stands up to scrutiny and build the geological picture that our engineers rely on. You will also manage your own jobs commercially and supervise the construction of works EGL has designed - the part of the job where the ground either behaves as you predicted or it does not.
At EGL, you will be part of a close, technically focused team where your contribution is visible and valued. You will work directly with experienced specialists and senior decision-makers, with real ownership of your work and support around you when the problems are complex.
This is a field-focused role. It involves sustained periods away from home, typically in blocks of one to three weeks, on sites across New Zealand including remote and mine locations.
What you will do
- Plan, scope and supervise ground investigations: CPT and seismic CPT, sonic drilling, rotary cored boreholes, augering, test pitting and in-situ testing.
- Log soil and rock to NZGS guidelines, including core recovery, defect logging, weathering and strength, and set up the data so it survives the life of the project.
- Undertake engineering geological and geomorphic mapping, slope and outcrop inspections, and landslide and fault assessment.
- Build ground models, cross sections and 3D interpretations that support geotechnical assessment and design.
- Install and monitor instrumentation and interpret groundwater and movement data.
- Write factual and interpretive investigation reports, and documentation supporting consent applications.
- Independently manage your own jobs; fee proposals, programme, budget, contractor procurement, variations, invoicing and client liaison, with accountability for the commercial outcome.
- Supervise construction of EGL-designed works; earthworks, retaining structures, ground improvement, subsoil drainage and foundations; verifying construction against design intent, assessing exposed ground conditions, managing non-conformances and preparing the records supporting producer statements.
- Mentor graduate engineering geologists and field technicians.
What you will bring
- A degree in engineering geology, geology or geological engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- Two to six years' relevant post-graduate experience in ground investigation and engineering geological logging.
- Hands-on experience supervising and logging CPT, sonic, rotary core and test pitting, with the confidence to direct a driller and hold quality at the rig.
- A track record of running jobs independently - scoping, pricing, programming and reporting.
- Construction supervision: experience observing or supervising geotechnical works against a design.
- Software: Core-GS or equivalent logging software, Leapfrog, QGIS or ArcGIS, and CAD familiarity.
- Chartership: working towards PEngGeol or CPEng, with our support to get there.
- Flexibility to travel: available for extended fieldwork outside Auckland, with a clean New Zealand driver licence and confidence in a 4WD.
- Commitment to continual learning: you want to keep building judgement alongside experienced specialists.
Why join EGL?

We are proud of our culture where people are valued, supported, and trusted to do their best work. Alongside a competitive salary we offer:
- Mobile phone allowance.
- Professional memberships and technical society fees covered.
- A supportive workplace with social club and regular team events.
- The chance to work alongside and learn from industry experts.
- Exposure to diverse, challenging and rewarding projects with high-impact clients in New Zealand and Australia.
