What they need
Show us what you build.
Tyr Laboratories is a defense technology company in North Austin with engineering, production, and testing in-house. We're looking for curious, resourceful Engineering Interns who learn quickly, apply themselves, and follow through.
We especially want to hear about your personal projects: a robot, an RC aircraft, a circuit, a software tool, a CAD model, a 3D-printed mechanism, or something else you pursued because you wanted to figure it out. It does not need to be polished or finished. Tell us what you personally did, what went wrong, and what you learned.
What you could work on
We will match assignments to your interests, current abilities, and the team's needs. You do not need experience in every area.
- Software: write small tools, test software, troubleshoot bugs, and analyze data.
- Avionics and electronics: support circuit development, hardware integration, documentation, and supervised bench testing.
- Mechanical design and CAD: create or revise models, drawings, prototypes, and fixtures.
- Aerospace: support aircraft design, engineering calculations, test planning, and analysis of results.
- 3D printing and prototyping: prepare and slice files, operate printers, troubleshoot failed prints, finish parts, and check fit and quality.
You will also document your work, communicate progress, and help with the practical tasks needed to finish a project. Assignments and equipment access will reflect your training, experience, and applicable safety and youth-employment requirements.
What we look for
- A personal project or other example that shows you can learn something and apply it. School, club, competition, and work projects also count.
- A starting point in at least one technical area, plus curiosity about how things work.
- Careful work, initiative, and the ability to work through problems while asking for help when needed.
- Reliability, clear communication, and follow-through on an agreed part-time schedule.
No degree, college enrollment, previous internship, or minimum years of professional experience is required. High-school, college, technical-school, and self-taught applicants are welcome. Applicants must be at least 16 years old.
Pay, schedule, and growth
$15–$20 per hour, based on demonstrated skills. Part-time only, approximately 10–20 hours per week. On-site at 4616 W Howard Ln, Austin, TX 78728, with a consistent schedule agreed around school or other commitments.
Strong performers may be considered for expanded responsibilities and a future full-time position based on performance and company needs. A full-time offer is not guaranteed.
When you apply
Tell us about a personal project you chose to pursue. Explain the goal, your own contribution, a problem you encountered, and what you tried. Links to photos, videos, code, CAD, or a short project write-up are welcome but optional. We care more about understanding your work and thought process than a polished portfolio.
Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States.
Tyr Laboratories Corporation is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
Pay: $15.00 - $20.00 per hour
Expected hours: 10.0 – 20.0 per week
Application Question(s):
- Tell us about a personal technical project you chose to pursue. What were you trying to make or learn, what did you personally do, and what is one problem you worked through? Explain what you tried and the result, including anything unfinished. Links to photos, videos, code, CAD, or a write-up are welcome but optional. If you do not have a personal project yet, use a school or club project and explain your own contribution.
- Which areas interest you most: software, avionics/electronics, mechanical design/CAD, aerospace, or 3D printing/prototyping? Tell us which tools or skills you have used and what you would like to learn next. You do not need experience in every area.
- What days and hours can you consistently work on-site in North Austin for a part-time internship, and when could you start?
