Engineering Manager

Role: Engineering Manager (E-commerce)

Location: West London - 2 days a week

Salary: £90,000 – £110,000 + Bonus

I’m partnering with a major UK retailer going through a significant transformation of its digital and e-commerce estate.

With major investment in its online proposition and ambitious plans for the next phase of growth, we’re looking for an Engineering Manager to take technical ownership of a key customer-facing e-commerce area.

This isn't a traditional Engineering Manager role focused on line management. The engineering teams are delivered through third-party partners, so we're looking for someone who can operate as the senior engineering owner of a complex digital product area.

You'll work alongside Product, Architecture, Tech Leads and engineering partners to ensure the platform is stable, scalable and technically fit for the future.

What you'll be doing:

• Owning the engineering health of a customer-facing e-commerce domain.
• Understanding the architecture, APIs, integrations and dependencies across a complex digital estate.
• Challenging technical decisions and identifying potential downstream impacts before they become problems.
• Driving improvements across stability, resilience, scalability, monitoring and observability.
• Identifying and prioritising upgrades, vulnerabilities, technical debt and platform improvements.
• Working with Product to balance new customer features against essential engineering investment.
• Holding SaaS providers and outsourced engineering partners accountable for technical outcomes.
• Supporting major incidents and complex L3 issues, working across internal teams and external suppliers.
• Helping modernise and evolve the technology as the digital proposition continues to scale.

Ideally, you'll have started your career in software engineering/development before progressing into Engineering Management, technical leadership or a similar role.

We're particularly interested in people who have:

• Worked within a large-scale retail or e-commerce environment.
• Owned technology supporting high-volume, customer-facing digital platforms.
• Strong knowledge of APIs, integrations, SaaS platforms and distributed systems.
• Experience working with outsourced engineering teams and third-party technology vendors.
• Been involved in modernisation or re-platforming legacy technology.
• Strong understanding of reliability, scalability, monitoring, vulnerabilities and operational engineering.
• Enough architectural and engineering depth to challenge proposed technical solutions without needing to code day-to-day.
• Worked closely with Product and can confidently challenge priorities when engineering investment is required.
• The ability to explain complex technical problems clearly and succinctly to senior stakeholders.

We're less concerned about whether you've had the exact title of Engineering Manager. You could currently be a Head of Engineering, Engineering Lead, Technology Manager or Domain Engineering Lead.

What matters is that you've operated at the intersection of engineering, architecture, product and third-party technology within a complex digital environment.
