About the Role
We are looking for a Software Engineering Manager to lead the team building Wave Browser. This role is about building and running a high-performing engineering team: you will own delivery, grow the people on your team, and create the conditions for great engineering to happen. You’ll operate at the intersection of people leadership, execution, and technical judgment, partnering closely with product, staff engineers, and leadership to turn strategy into shipped, reliable software.
Wave Browser is built on the Chromium project; a large-scale C++ codebase with its own toolchain, build system, and upstream release cadence. Our web backend services are built across JavaScript, C#, and Go. You don’t need to be the strongest coder on the team, but you do need enough technical depth to ask the right questions, weigh tradeoffs credibly, and recognize when a shortcut today becomes a liability tomorrow. Experience managing teams working in a large-scale C++ or browser codebase is a strong plus.
What You’ll Do
People Leadership
- Hire, onboard, and retain a strong team of engineers; own the hiring bar for your team
- Run regular 1:1s, set clear expectations, and give direct, actionable feedback
- Build individual growth plans and actively invest in the career development of every engineer on the team
- Manage performance fairly and decisively, recognizing strong work and addressing gaps early
- Foster a team culture of ownership, accountability, psychological safety, and continuous improvement
Delivery & Execution
- Own the team’s delivery end to end: planning, prioritization, estimation, and predictable execution
- Manage the cadence of Chromium upstream rebases and Wave Browser releases, balancing new feature work against upkeep, security patches, and stability
- Establish and improve engineering processes: sprint planning, code review, release management, and incident response
- Track and act on delivery and quality metrics (lead time, deployment frequency, crash rates, defect escape rate)
- Identify and remove blockers, whether technical, organizational, or cross-team
Technical Stewardship
- Partner with staff and senior engineers on architecture decisions, ensuring sound tradeoffs between speed, quality, and maintainability
- Ensure the team manages technical debt deliberately rather than letting it compound
- Champion engineering standards, testing practices, and operational excellence for a product running on millions of desktops
- Stay close enough to the code and the Chromium ecosystem to make informed decisions and earn the team’s trust
Strategic Influence
- Translate business goals and product roadmap into an achievable technical plan and team structure
- Partner with product management on scope, priorities, and tradeoffs; push back when needed with data
- Communicate status, risk, and technical direction clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Collaborate with other engineering managers to align on shared infrastructure, dependencies, and org-wide practices
Who You Are
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including 3+ years managing engineering teams
- Proven track record of hiring, developing, and retaining strong engineers
- Demonstrated ability to deliver complex software projects predictably in a fast-moving environment
- Solid technical foundation; able to engage credibly in design reviews and understand systems design, data structures, and software design patterns and anti-patterns
- Experience managing teams working in a strongly typed, imperative language (C++, C#, Java, Rust, Go, etc.)
- Comfortable leading across polyglot architectures and reasoning about tradeoffs when systems are built in different languages, runtimes, and paradigms
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to influence peers, partners, and leadership
- Data-driven mindset; uses metrics to understand team health and guide decisions without losing sight of the people behind them
- Proficiency with Git, Agile methodologies, and collaborative development workflows
Preferred Skills
- Experience managing teams working in a large-scale C++ codebase (Chromium experience is a strong plus)
- Hands-on background as a C++ engineer before moving into management
- Experience shipping browser technology, system software, or native desktop applications on Windows and/or macOS
- Familiarity with release engineering for desktop clients: auto-updates, staged rollouts, crash reporting, and telemetry
- Experience working with distributed or remote teams across time zones
