Engineering Team Lead

If you’re an experienced software engineer who has moved into leadership but doesn’t want to leave the technical work behind, this role offers a good balance.

You’ll take responsibility for a small team Software Engineers, supporting their development and helping them deliver successfully, while continuing to contribute to important technical decisions.

You'll work with the stakeholders to influence how the engineering function evolves, from architecture and development practices through to reliability and the way software gets into production.

What you'll be doing

• Leading a small team of Software Engineers and supporting them to do their best work
• Staying technically involved and helping the team navigate difficult engineering challenges
• Contributing to decisions around the future direction of the technology platform
• Raising the bar around development quality and consistency
• Making sure systems can continue to perform reliably and securely as they scale
• Improving the practices around testing, deployment and getting changes safely into production
• Helping strengthen monitoring, operational resilience and the way incidents are handled
• Keeping delivery moving by identifying risks, dependencies and blockers early
• Mentoring engineers and having meaningful conversations about performance, development and career progression
• Helping grow the team, interviewing and onboarding

What we're looking for
You’ll be an established Senior Software Engineer who has already taken on leadership responsibility and enjoys mentoring others.

We’re looking for someone with:

• A strong software engineering background and the credibility to lead technical conversations
• Experience managing or leading software engineers
• The ability to coach others while continuing to contribute technically yourself
• Good architectural judgement and experience making decisions that affect a wider product or platform
• An understanding of what it takes to run dependable, secure and scalable software
• Exposure to modern approaches to automated testing, deployment and continuous delivery
• Experience diagnosing and working through difficult technical problems
• Confidence working in an Agile product environment
• The ability to work closely with Product, Design and other areas of the business
• Strong communication skills and the ability to bring people together around technical decisions
