What they need

Engineering Workshop Supervisor – Fabrication & Welding

We are an established and growing multi-disciplinary engineering and manufacturing company based in Bridge of Don, Aberdeen.

As a relatively small, but diverse engineering business, our strength lies in our flexibility, technical expertise and ability to provide customers with complete manufacturing solutions under one roof.

The Role

The successful candidate will take responsibility for the day-to-day organisation, coordination and supervision of our fabrication and welding activities, while supporting efficient workflow across our wider manufacturing operations.

We are particularly interested in candidates who have progressed through a practical engineering or fabrication background and have experience supervising personnel within a small sized, multi-disciplinary engineering business.

Although predominantly supervisory, the successful candidate must retain the technical knowledge and practical ability to step in and provide hands-on assistance when necessary.

Key Responsibilities

Workshop Supervision & Personnel Management

  • Take responsibility for the daily coordination and supervision of workshop personnel, including welders, fabricators, technicians and labourers.
  • Plan, allocate and monitor workloads according to production priorities, personnel capabilities and available resources.
  • Provide clear instructions, direction and technical guidance to workshop personnel.
  • Maintain an organised and productive working environment, ensuring employees understand their responsibilities and priorities.
  • Maintain a visible presence on the shop floor, providing practical support and resolving production issues when required.

Production Planning & Workflow Coordination

  • Coordinate daily and weekly workshop activities to maintain an efficient and consistent flow of production.
  • Manage multiple jobs simultaneously, ensuring work is prioritised in accordance with delivery commitments.
  • Monitor job progress against planned production requirements and take corrective action where necessary.

Technical & Manufacturing Responsibilities

  • Read, interpret and work confidently from complex engineering and manufacturing drawings.
  • Prepare accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs), cutting lists and material requirements for fabrication and assembly projects.
  • Identify drawing discrepancies, missing information and potential manufacturing problems at an early stage.
  • Ensure completed work meets drawing specifications, dimensional requirements and customer expectations.
  • Ensure all workshop activities are undertaken in accordance with company HSE policies and procedures

Essential Experience & Skills

The successful candidate must demonstrate:

  • A strong practical background in fabrication and welding, ideally having completed a recognised engineering or fabrication apprenticeship.
  • Previous experience in a Workshop Supervisor, Fabrication Supervisor, Chargehand, Leading Hand or similar position.
  • Experience working within a small sized engineering or manufacturing business, where flexibility and the ability to manage varied responsibilities are essential.

Desirable Experience

Experience in any of the following would be advantageous:

  • Working within a multi-disciplinary engineering environment incorporating fabrication, machining, waterjet cutting and assembly.
  • Knowledge of CNC and manual machining processes.

Importantly, you will understand the demands of a smaller engineering business, where effective communication, flexibility and personal accountability are key to keeping production moving.

We are not looking for someone who manages production from an office, this is a workshop based role, where you will be hands on in the workshop.

Benefits:

  • Company pension
  • On-site parking
