About Us
Red Balloon of the Air helps young people between the ages of 11 and 19 who have self-excluded from mainstream school for various reasons, including Emotion-Based School Avoidance (EBSA). They often have needs that their previous schools were unable to meet.
Summary of role
Red Balloon of the Air aims to create a safe yet stimulating environment for our learners. We have an embedded safeguarding culture, which enables everyone to feel that they can work and learn without barriers. RBAir staff build positive relationships with learners, families and colleagues, supporting students to re-engage with education, develop confidence and achieve their individual learning goals within a nurturing and trauma-informed environment.
We are seeking to add a dedicated and compassionate English Teacher to provide high-quality, personalised English education to young people across KS3, 4 and 5 who are unable to access mainstream schooling. Working both online and face-to-face with learners on a one-to-one basis and in small groups, the successful candidate will join the team to support students to re-engage with learning, build trust and achieve their outcomes. This may be via an accredited route or by continuing to build their literacy skills. The taught programmes include GCSE, Functional Skills and pre-qualification routes such as AQA Unit Awards.
The role requires an innovative and flexible practitioner who can combine excellent teaching with strong relationship-building skills and with experience of working with a range of SEND needs, including neurodiverse conditions, specific learning difficulty i.e dyslexia and significant anxiety.
Our learners have the capacity to improve and return to the mainstream environment at some point in their education given the right opportunities and support. The successful candidate will be able to offer the warmth, encouragement and expertise that our learners need to thrive and achieve their aims.
Some key responsibilities of this role include:
- Plan and deliver high-quality English lessons to students on a 1:1 basis and in small groups, both online and face to face.
- Monitor student progress through assessment, feedback and record keeping, completing reports and other required documentation.
- Work collaboratively with families, colleagues and external professionals to support individual student outcomes and wellbeing.
- Contribute to a positive, inclusive and safeguarding-focused learning environment in line with Red Balloon's values and philosophy.
To be considered for this role as a minimum you will need:
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
- A degree in English or a related subject.
- Experience of working with young people with SEND, anxiety and/or Emotion-Based School Non-Attendance (EBSNA).
- Strong IT skills and the ability to deliver engaging lessons both online and in person.
For full details of the role, please refer to a full job description and person specification available on our website www.rbair.org.uk/job-vacancies. Please also refer to our Red Balloon of the Air policies, including our policies on Safer Recruitment and Safeguarding and Child Protection.
