What they need
Job Overview
Sowing Seeds Alternative Learning is seeking a passionate, skilled and adaptable English Tutor to support children and young people at our Idle Centre and, where required, across West Yorkshire.
Our learners may have autism, ADHD, dyslexia, anxiety, EBSA, SEMH, trauma, sensory differences, speech and language needs or other barriers to accessing education. You will deliver personalised English tuition that reflects each learner’s starting point, individual needs and agreed outcomes.
The role may include teaching Functional Skills English from Entry Level to Level 2, alongside supporting learners working across primary, secondary and GCSE-level English. You will help learners develop their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills while rebuilding confidence and creating positive experiences of English and literacy.
We recognise that some learners may have experienced significant disruption to education or developed anxiety or negative associations with English. Teaching should therefore be flexible, engaging and accessible, enabling learners to make meaningful progress without creating unnecessary pressure.
Responsibilities
- Deliver engaging one-to-one and small-group English tuition
- Plan personalised learning based on each learner’s starting point, needs and agreed outcomes
- Teach relevant primary, secondary, GCSE and Functional Skills English content
- Develop learners’ reading, writing, speaking, listening and communication skills
- Support the development of spelling, punctuation, grammar, vocabulary and comprehension
- Adapt teaching for learners with SEND, dyslexia, anxiety, EBSA and other barriers to education
- Use practical, creative and accessible approaches to engage learners who may have previously struggled with English
- Support learners to develop confidence in communicating their ideas verbally and in writing
- Complete baseline assessments and identify strengths and gaps in knowledge and skills
- Monitor progress and adapt teaching strategies appropriately
- Prepare learners for Functional Skills, GCSE or other examinations and assessments where required
- Support learners with examination techniques and appropriate access arrangements
- Maintain accurate records of attendance, engagement, learning and progress
- Provide appropriate feedback to learners, families and professionals
- Contribute to Personal Learning Plans, reviews and quality-assurance processes
- Work collaboratively with learning mentors, tutors, SEND professionals and the wider education team
- Follow examination and awarding-body requirements where applicable
- Promote literacy and communication skills that support learners in education, employment, independent living and everyday life
- Report safeguarding or welfare concerns immediately to the Designated Safeguarding Lead
Requirements
- Experience teaching or tutoring English to children or young people
- Strong subject knowledge across the relevant English curriculum
- A recognised teaching or tutoring qualification, or relevant professional experience
- A minimum of degree or an equivalent qualification in English
- Experience supporting learners with SEND or barriers to education
- Understanding of autism, ADHD, dyslexia, anxiety, EBSA and inclusive teaching practices
- Ability to assess learners’ starting points and plan personalised learning
- Strong understanding of literacy development, including reading, writing, spelling, punctuation, grammar and comprehension
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- A calm, patient, creative and flexible approach
- Ability to build positive relationships and motivate learners who may have experienced difficulties with English or education
- Strong organisation, planning and record-keeping skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Commitment to safeguarding, confidentiality and professional boundaries
- Experience delivering Functional Skills English and/or GCSE English is desirable
- Experience supporting learners with dyslexia and literacy difficulties is desirable
- Willingness to travel across West Yorkshire where required
