Senior Java Software Engineer (Full Stack)

Location: Sofia, Bulgaria (Hybrid – approx. 50% onsite)

Contract: Freelance | Full-time (40 hours/week)

Expected start: January 2027

About the opportunity

At HR Partners, we are looking for an experienced Senior Java Software Engineer to join an international IT project supporting a European public-sector organisation.

The successful candidate will contribute to the development, modernisation and maintenance of enterprise applications, working with both legacy Java systems and modern cloud-native architectures.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, maintain and enhance enterprise applications using Java and Spring Boot.
• Work with legacy monolithic systems (Java EE/Jakarta EE, EJB) and modern microservices.
• Develop and integrate RESTful APIs.
• Contribute to frontend development using React.
• Support cloud-based application development and deployment.
• Implement automated testing, CI/CD and security best practices.
• Collaborate with international development teams, architects and stakeholders.
• Prepare technical documentation and participate in Agile development activities.

Required qualifications and experience

• Minimum 7 years of professional software development experience, including at least 4 years in relevant technologies.
• Strong Java development background, including Java EE/Jakarta EE, EJB and Spring Boot.
• Experience with legacy monolithic applications and microservices.
• Knowledge of React or similar TypeScript-based frontend frameworks.
• Experience with REST APIs, SQL/NoSQL databases and Git.
• Knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes, Kafka and CI/CD tools.
• Experience with AWS or Azure.
• Understanding of software security and automated testing.
• University degree in ICT or equivalent recognised qualification.
• Bulgarian: bilingual proficiency.
• English: advanced proficiency.
• EU citizenship required.
• Availability to work onsite in Sofia at least twice per week.
