Enterprise Architect - Infrastructure and Cloud

Enterprise Solutions, Inc. is seeking an experienced Enterprise Architect to support the Fairfax County Department of Information Technology’s Chief Enterprise Architect during major infrastructure transitions and cloud modernization initiatives.

This position will lead technical discovery, assess existing systems, and develop comprehensive documentation of the County’s current enterprise architecture across on-premises data centers and hybrid-cloud environments. The architect will work closely with infrastructure, cloud, database, desktop, security, and agency teams to translate complex technical and business needs into clear architecture artifacts and actionable delivery plans.

The ideal candidate combines strong infrastructure knowledge with excellent communication, workshop facilitation, and technical documentation skills.

Key Responsibilities

• Serve as an architectural liaison among County IT teams, agency stakeholders, and technical subject matter experts.
• Facilitate discovery interviews and workshops to understand existing environments, business needs, technical constraints, and modernization priorities.
• Review enterprise systems and establish an accurate baseline of current infrastructure and hybrid-cloud architecture.
• Develop and maintain system topology diagrams, data flow diagrams, network dependency matrices, service catalogs, and comprehensive current-state architecture documentation.
• Identify and document relationships and dependencies among systems, infrastructure platforms, applications, and services.
• Assess enterprise storage platforms, documenting existing capabilities, limitations, gaps, and improvement opportunities.
• Map and evaluate observability tools and architecture, including monitoring, logging, and related operational visibility capabilities.
• Plan and execute archiving and data-retention proofs of concept to evaluate opportunities to reduce cost and risk.
• Translate assessment findings into clear technical recommendations and delivery plans.
• Present findings and explain complex infrastructure and cloud concepts to technical teams and senior leadership.
• Build consensus across stakeholders and adjust plans as priorities and requirements evolve.

Required Qualifications

• Demonstrated experience in enterprise architecture, infrastructure architecture, or systems architecture within a complex enterprise environment.
• Strong understanding of on-premises data centers, hybrid-cloud environments, enterprise storage, networking, and system dependencies.
• Experience conducting technical discovery, infrastructure assessments, and current-state architecture documentation.
• Ability to produce clear architecture diagrams, dependency maps, service catalogs, and technical assessment reports.
• Experience evaluating enterprise monitoring, logging, or observability capabilities.
• Knowledge of data archiving and retention concepts and experience evaluating technical solutions through proofs of concept.
• Strong workshop facilitation, analytical, organizational, and technical writing skills.
• Ability to communicate effectively with engineers, business stakeholders, and senior leaders.
• Proven ability to collaborate across teams, build consensus, and manage changing priorities.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience supporting local government or other public-sector organizations.
• Experience supporting large-scale infrastructure transitions or cloud modernization programs.
• Experience assessing enterprise storage and data lifecycle management solutions.
• Relevant enterprise architecture, cloud, infrastructure, or IT service management certifications.

Pay: $160,000.00 - $185,000.00 per year
