What they need
No truss experience or college degree required. We will train the right person.
Reisterstown Lumber Company is looking for an Entry-Level Truss Designer to join our design and manufacturing team.
This is a technical, computer-based position for someone who enjoys solving problems and figuring out how things fit together. We're looking for someone with good math skills, attention to detail, and the ability to visualize things in three dimensions.
If you enjoy computers, puzzles, geometry, building things, or figuring out how things work, this could be a great opportunity.
What You'll Do
We'll train you to:
- Read and interpret architectural and construction drawings
- Create 3D building models using specialized design software
- Design roof and floor truss systems using Alpine software
- Identify missing or conflicting information on construction plans
- Work with designers, engineers, salespeople, and our manufacturing team
- Review designs for accuracy before production
You'll see your designs manufactured in our truss plant and installed in real buildings throughout the area.
You Might Be a Good Fit If You:
- Are comfortable with computers and learning new software
- Have good basic math and geometry skills, including fractions and measurements
- Can visualize how objects fit together
- Enjoy solving problems and noticing details
- Can concentrate on detailed work and take pride in accuracy
- Are dependable, curious, and willing to ask questions
Experience with construction, carpentry, CAD, drafting, 3D modeling, or mechanical work is helpful, but not required.
Requirements: High school diploma or equivalent. No college degree or previous truss design experience necessary.
Training and Career Growth
You'll receive hands-on training in construction fundamentals, blueprint reading, roof geometry, 3D modeling, Alpine design software, and basic structural concepts.
As your skills develop, you'll progress from assisting with straightforward projects to independently designing more complex roof and floor systems.
This is an opportunity to build a specialized technical career without a four-year degree.
Hiring Process
We're more interested in how you think than what's on your résumé.
Candidates will complete a short aptitude exercise covering basic math, drawings, spatial reasoning, attention to detail, and problem solving.
No knowledge of trusses is needed to complete the exercise.
