What they need

Entry Systems Engineer – Weekend Support (Linux / Trading Infrastructure)

Location: Austin

Employment type: Permanent, weekend-based schedule

Our client operates a high-performance trading platform built on finely tuned Linux servers distributed across data centres and offices worldwide. These systems are highly automated, performance-critical, and central to the firm’s global trading operation.

They are now seeking a Entry Systems Engineer to join the team on a weekend support schedule , providing cover for mission-critical Linux infrastructure while developing hands-on expertise in high-performance systems engineering.

The role

The Entry Systems Engineer will help maintain, troubleshoot, and support the firm’s Linux server estate across global data centres and offices. Working alongside experienced systems engineers, they will assist with production support, configuration changes, automation, and performance-related improvements.

This is an excellent entry route into trading infrastructure for an engineer with solid Linux foundations who wants exposure to low-latency, high-availability environments.

Responsibilities

  • Provide weekend production support for Linux-based servers across global data centres and offices.
  • Analyse, diagnose, and resolve Linux server issues, escalating complex incidents where required.
  • Assist with the creation, testing, deployment, and maintenance of packages, batch files, and OS-level scripts.
  • Support move, add, and change requests, including server configuration and lifecycle activities.
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce latency across the infrastructure estate.
  • Work with internal technology teams and vendors to deliver effective, timely solutions.
  • Contribute to documentation, runbooks, monitoring, and operational improvements.
  • Gain exposure to infrastructure planning, capacity management, and long-term platform strategy.

The candidate

The successful candidate will be an early-career Linux engineer with strong fundamentals, a proactive attitude, and genuine interest in performance-critical infrastructure.

  • 1–3 years’ experience in Linux/Unix system administration, or equivalent hands-on lab, internship, or production experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of Linux troubleshooting, services, filesystems, processes, and system performance.
  • Solid understanding of core networking protocols, including IP, TCP, UDP, DHCP, DNS/NTP, NFS, and TFTP.
  • Exposure to automation and configuration tools such as Ansible, Kickstart, Yum, Git, or SVN.
  • Scripting ability in Bash and/or Python.
  • Familiarity with server hardware, BIOS configuration, and data-centre operations is desirable.
  • Interest in performance tuning, kernel-level concepts, and low-latency systems is a strong plus.
  • Analytical, organised, and proactive, with strong attention to detail.
  • Comfortable working independently during weekend shifts while collaborating with global teams when needed.
  • Able to manage changing priorities and respond calmly to production issues.

What’s on offer

  • Direct exposure to high-performance trading infrastructure and global data-centre operations.
  • Mentorship from experienced Linux and infrastructure engineers.
  • A technically demanding environment with real ownership and rapid learning.
  • Competitive compensation, weekend-working premium where applicable, and benefits.

This is a strong opportunity for a motivated junior engineer to build specialist experience in Linux, automation, and performance-critical trading systems.
