Welcome to the future of nuclear energy , where Westinghouse Electric Company is leading the field with expertise and innovation to shape the power of tomorrow.

At Westinghouse, innovation is in our DNA. We are creative. We think differently. We reimagine the possible across the nuclear industry every day.

As an Environmental Manager, you will play a key role in ensuring environmental compliance, delivering practical, day-to-day support to maintain adherence to the site's environmental permit at a nuclear licensed manufacturing facility in Preston.

This is a critical role, there is currently no dedicated Environment Team, and you will work closely and report to the Head of Environment to address urgent compliance needs while helping to establish, onboard, and develop a new environmental function. We need someone who can hit the ground running, working at pace to review, improve, and embed processes while supporting the Head of Environment to build a capable and resilient team.

You have extensive experience in environmental permitting within a nuclear or other highly regulated industry and be comfortable balancing strategic work with hands-on operational tasks.

This role is perfect for someone who thrives in dynamic environments, can take ownership of key deliverables, and is eager to drive long-term compliance improvements while supporting the creation of a high-performing team.

Responsibilities Environmental Permit Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with the site's environmental permit and regulatory requirements.
  • Review and improve environmental compliance processes.
  • Provide practical guidance on permit requirements to operational teams.
  • Identify compliance gaps and implement corrective actions.
  • Support regulatory inspections, audits, and regulator engagement.

Environment Team Development

  • Support the growth and development of the Environment Team.
  • Help with onboarding, training, and mentoring team members.
  • Develop effective team processes for monitoring and managing compliance.
  • Share technical knowledge and promote best practice.

Process & System Improvement

  • Develop systems, procedures, and documentation to support permit compliance.
  • Maintain accurate compliance records and reporting.
  • Support audit and inspection programmes and continuous improvement projects.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Collaborate with engineering, operations, and safety teams to embed environmental requirements.
  • Provide environmental advice and compliance updates to operational teams and senior leaders.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of environmental permitting requirements and compliance obligations within a nuclear licensed site or another regulated industry, such as chemicals, pharmaceuticals, or energy.
  • Experience interpreting and applying permit conditions within operational environments.
  • Collaborative approach to working with operational teams to support environmental compliance and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Experience supporting the onboarding, development, and mentoring of colleagues.
  • Understanding of audit and regulatory inspection processes, including supporting external audits and inspections.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of ISO 14001 environmental management systems.
  • NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate or an equivalent qualification.
  • Familiarity with UK environmental regulations and regulatory bodies, including the Environment Agency and ONR.
  • Ability to support process improvement and continuous improvement initiatives.
