Our client is a growing environmental engineering and consulting firm specializing in sustainable water, wastewater, and infrastructure solutions for municipalities, utilities, and public agencies. The firm partners with clients on a diverse portfolio of planning, design, hydraulic modeling, flood mitigation, coastal resiliency, and environmental compliance projects that improve critical public infrastructure. With a collaborative, entrepreneurial culture and a commitment to innovation, the organization offers engineers the opportunity to take ownership of impactful projects while working alongside experienced technical leaders.

About the Role

Due to continued growth, they are seeking an Environmental Design Engineer / Project Manager to lead hydraulic design efforts on complex water resources projects throughout the New York metropolitan area.

Responsibilities

  • The Environmental Design Engineer / Project Manager will serve as the technical lead on water resources projects, supporting hydraulic design, project execution, and client coordination from project initiation through completion.
  • Lead hydraulic design calculations and prepare engineering design deliverables for water, wastewater, and stormwater infrastructure projects.
  • Develop, analyze, and interpret hydraulic and hydrologic models using software such as InfoWater, SWMM, PCSWMM, and HEC-RAS.
  • Serve as the lead engineer on complex infrastructure projects, ensuring designs meet project objectives, regulatory requirements, schedules, and budgets.
  • Coordinate with municipal clients, utilities, regulatory agencies, and internal engineering teams throughout project execution.
  • Manage project scope, schedules, resource planning, budgets, and billing coordination for assigned projects (Project Manager level).
  • Support technical design efforts while receiving mentorship on client management responsibilities (Project Engineer level).
  • Perform occasional field visits to collect project data, verify existing conditions, and support engineering documentation using mobile technology.
  • Prepare engineering reports, design calculations, technical memorandums, and construction support documentation.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver innovative and cost-effective engineering solutions.
  • Maintain compliance with applicable environmental regulations, permitting requirements, and engineering standards throughout project execution.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • 3–5 years of experience for the Design Engineer track or 8+ years for the Project Manager track within water resources, water/wastewater, or civil infrastructure engineering.

Required Skills

  • Strong proficiency with hydraulic and hydrologic modeling software including InfoWater, SWMM/PCSWMM, and HEC-RAS.
  • Experience designing water, wastewater, stormwater, or hydraulic infrastructure projects.
  • Working knowledge of environmental regulations, waterfront/coastal requirements, and permitting processes involving state and federal agencies.
  • Experience using GIS, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and related engineering design software; familiarity with OpenFlows/Bentley products is a plus.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license required for Project Manager candidates; Design Engineer candidates should be eligible to obtain licensure within 12 months.
  • Must reside within the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area and be comfortable with a hybrid work schedule and occasional local travel to project sites.
