ESD controls Engineer

The Control ESD Engineer is responsible for maintaining and improving ESD control systems within high-precision automotive SMT manufacturing operations. This role ensures compliance with ANSI/ESD S20.20 requirements, customer expectations, and applicable automotive quality standards, including IATF 16949, VDA 6.3, and VDA 6.5.

The engineer works closely with quality, process engineering, production, maintenance, and supplier teams to prevent ESD-related defects, strengthen manufacturing controls, support audit readiness, and drive continuous improvement across SMT production lines.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and maintain the site’s ESD Control Program in accordance with ANSI/ESD S20.20 requirements.
• Enforce ESD controls across SMT production lines, workstations, material-handling areas, storage locations, and inspection areas.
• Conduct routine ESD audits, compliance inspections, and verification activities, including:
• Grounding and bonding systems
• Personnel grounding and wrist-strap compliance
• ESD flooring and work surfaces
• Ionization systems
• ESD protective packaging and material handling
• Environmental conditions and ESD-protected areas
• Maintain accurate ESD documentation, records, procedures, training materials, and audit evidence.
• Support the development and execution of annual internal and external audit plans aligned with IATF 16949, VDA 6.3, VDA 6.5, and ANSI/ESD S20.20.
• Prepare departments and production areas for customer, certification, and regulatory audits.
• Monitor quality and ESD performance data, identify trends, and present actionable recommendations to management.
• Coordinate and support Management Review Meetings by translating quality, audit, and ESD performance results into improvement actions.
• Issue and manage Non-Conformity Reports related to ESD, process compliance, product quality, and system effectiveness.
• Lead or support cross-functional 8D problem-solving activities, including root-cause analysis, containment, corrective action, and effectiveness verification.
• Partner with production, process engineering, equipment engineering, maintenance, and quality teams to implement sustainable corrective and preventive actions.
• Investigate ESD-related failures, customer complaints, process deviations, and recurring defects.
• Establish appropriate ESD control methods for new equipment, new product introduction, process changes, and facility modifications.
• Deliver ESD awareness and compliance training to employees, contractors, and relevant support functions.
• Promote continuous improvement and systematic compliance throughout daily manufacturing activities.
• Track corrective actions, audit findings, ESD violations, and improvement projects to ensure timely closure and sustained effectiveness.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality Engineering, or a related technical field.
• Experience in ESD control, electronics manufacturing, SMT production, automotive manufacturing, or quality engineering.
• Working knowledge of ANSI/ESD S20.20 requirements and ESD control principles.
