What they need

We are seeking a motivated, detail-oriented, and enthusiastic Junior Passive Fire Protection Estimator to join our team supporting New Zealand construction projects. The successful candidate will assist with quantity take-offs, cost estimates, tender preparation, and pricing submissions for commercial and residential construction projects specializing in passive fire protection systems.

This role is ideal for someone looking to develop their estimating career within the construction industry. The candidate will work closely with senior estimators, project managers, suppliers, and subcontractors to learn passive fire protection systems, interpret construction drawings, and prepare accurate and competitive tenders.

The ideal candidate has a basic understanding of construction methods, strong numerical and analytical skills, and a willingness to learn about passive fire protection systems and New Zealand construction requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in reviewing architectural, structural, fire protection, and construction drawings, specifications, and tender documents.
  • Perform quantity take-offs and measurements for passive fire protection works under the guidance of senior estimators.
  • Assist in preparing cost estimates, tender pricing, Bills of Quantities (BOQs), and pricing schedules.
  • Measure and quantify passive fire protection systems, including:
  • Fire-rated wall and ceiling systems.
  • Fire stopping and penetration sealing systems.
  • Fire-rated sealants, mastics, and collars.
  • Pipe, cable, and service penetration fire stopping.
  • Linear joint seals and perimeter fire stopping.
  • Fire-rated boards, wraps, and enclosures.
  • Fire and smoke barriers and cavity barriers.
  • Structural steel fire protection and intumescent coatings, where applicable.
  • Assist in identifying service penetrations, joints, and other areas requiring passive fire protection from drawings and specifications.
  • Request and compare supplier and subcontractor quotations to support tender pricing.
  • Assist with calculating material quantities, labour costs, installation rates, wastage, and other project costs.
  • Help prepare tender clarifications, scope inclusions, exclusions, and commercial documentation.
  • Review product datasheets and technical specifications to understand the requirements of passive fire protection systems.
  • Identify discrepancies, missing information, and potential scope gaps, referring technical queries to senior estimators when necessary.
  • Maintain estimating spreadsheets, supplier quotations, pricing records, and historical cost databases.
  • Coordinate with senior estimators, project managers, and New Zealand-based project teams to obtain project information and clarify requirements.
  • Assist with tender revisions and cost updates while ensuring submissions meet deadlines.
  • Develop knowledge of passive fire protection systems, estimating practices, and relevant New Zealand construction requirements through on-the-job training.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or Diploma in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Architecture, or a related field.
  • At least 1 year of construction-related experience is preferred, although fresh graduates with relevant qualifications and a strong willingness to learn are encouraged to apply.
  • Basic understanding of construction drawings, building materials, and construction methods.
  • Interest in developing a career in construction estimating, particularly in passive fire protection.
  • Familiarity with New Zealand construction projects or passive fire protection systems is an advantage but not essential.

Technical Skills

  • Basic to intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Excel, with a willingness to develop advanced spreadsheet and estimating skills.
  • Familiarity with quantity take-off and estimating software such as:
  • Bluebeam Revu
  • PlanSwift
  • CostX
  • Cubit
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural and construction drawings, or willingness to develop this skill.
  • Basic numerical, measurement, and calculation skills.
  • Ability to organise project information, supplier quotations, and estimating records accurately.
  • Willingness to learn about fire-rated systems, penetration sealing products, technical datasheets, and relevant compliance requirements.

Key Competencies

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Good numerical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Willingness to learn and accept feedback.
  • Good organisational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work collaboratively with senior team members.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage assigned tasks and support multiple tenders within deadlines.
  • Proactive attitude and eagerness to develop technical and commercial knowledge.
  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks while knowing when to seek guidance.

Preferred Experience

  • Exposure to commercial or residential construction projects.
  • Experience with quantity take-offs, cost calculations, or construction documentation.
  • Familiarity with fire stopping, fire-rated walls, service penetrations, and other passive fire protection systems.
  • Exposure to supplier quotations, BOQs, or tender documentation.
  • Experience working with remote teams or supporting New Zealand-based construction projects.
